Yes, the A gates can take a widebody aircraft... EVA used to depart there sometimes with their 777-300ER, and currently Delta has 767s out there.
Other things I heard/saw while flying in over the weekend and talking to one of my favorite CSAs: Delta is apparently in talks to move to the South Satellite with Northwest, and I noticed that United already swapped gates with Alaska out at the N Satellite. our UA gates are all on the West half of the terminal and Alaska has the East. No more of the four corners of Alaska setup.
Per earlier posts in this thread, it does seem like this will be a slow process since so many airlines might be in the shuffle. Should be nice once it's done though!

But how much room is there at the A gates to accommodate the large crowds for a 777? From what I remember of the A gates, the seating areas were on the small side, and get crowded even for the 737's that Alaska flies.

You must be thinking of the D/C gates. Those do not have lots of room, you are right. However, A gates are new and have a fair amount of room for passengers.

Thanks. I'm guessing that LH's SEA-FRA took away a lot of the *A SEA-CPH connecting traffic. It's a real shame.

Also NW has delayed the start of its planned service to PEK
I guess it wouldn't be too bad if UA moves to A and uses the DL club space there as its RCC -- that would mean no subway ride, easier access to the Pacific Marketplace food and shops, slightly nicer gate areas, and a lounge with <gasp> windows!
They might even be able to use the digital displays at the A gates for proper gate info screens
It will be interesting to see if AC and US follow them out of N as well.

RCC Club in N
Not long ago I was chatting with a staff member about the RCC in SEA. The individual mentioned that SEA is very expensive property. So if this move results in a change to a venue that's closer and has windows, then okay.
As others have mentioned, the train ride can be a bit wearisome at times for me, but it would be so nice to have the convenience and amenities (Pacific Marketplace) of A.
And, I suppose that if I missed the train ride (as a few folk have mentioned they will), one could just ride to N and then return.

When DL moves out the A Concourse will be a very expensive ghost town, servicing only a few AA flights, JetBlue, and VX if they stay. Presumably the Port of Seattle, an exceptionally stupid and short-sighted organization, will then be willing to make a deal with UA to fill the space. Although unless UA airside check-in desks move south also, the hike from there to the airplanes will be the longest possible walk at SEA... longer, distance-wise, than the train ride to the N gates, I think.
SEA has lost a good deal of high-profile service in the past six months: SK / CPH, NW / LHR, the announced NW / PEK never launched, Air China pulled out, etc. It's very sad but a sign of the current hard times.

I'd be a little torn if they moved. So many memories at N.... and I do like UA's ticket counter position as the first carrier at the entrance to the terminal. But those A gates are definitely nicer and I would not miss the train.

I'd expect so, since they rely upon UA's ground staff for the puddle jumpers to Vancouver and the YYC/YYZ flights which all seem to be codeshares (given they are given a UA flight number in the 8XXX range).
