Apparently smoke in cockpit. Emergency services were rolled at SBA.

Looks like they made it to about 27,000 feet before they decided to divert - initially to Vandenberg AFB, but then turned around and went back to SBA.

Update: SBA-SFO is now scheduled for 11:30pm departure, using a different plane.

Looks like they finally made to SFO by 2AM! with a different aircraft #4637 instead of the original #4627

One of the guys on my staff was on that flight...sounded like a pretty horrible experience at SBA. He said they saw smoke trailing out of one of the engines, but that there was no smoke detectable in the cabin.

5+ hour drive --- would gotten to SFO about the same time or may be less than an hour earlier.

It's only 90 mi, but at 6-7 PM, you wouldn't arrive at LAX until 10 PM due to traffic. Welcome to California!

As a CRJ-200 the number of available seats would have been an issue for off-loading an A320.

SBA used to be my home airport. Havent seen an airbus there...ever! Even when UA used to fly mainline in there.

Here is a pic from a news article:

Glad to hear all went safely. Smoke in the cabin is a serious threat to an aircraft. Well done to the flight crew for putting safety first.
