You have to clear security to transit to another flight. If you have an onward boarding pass, you should be able to clear security (usually it's very quick) and access the lounge. However, I have only tried to access the lounge when I have an onward boarding class on a Star Alliance carrier (in business or as a Star Gold). If you are continuing in coach and don't have Star Gold status, I don't think they will let you into the lounge.

I do have *G status, so agree I should be admitted to the lounge. The thing I'm still not sure about is whether I can clear Security to get to the lounge with a BP for the next day. And if successful, will there be any issue getting to Immigration/Customs and then leaving the airport, since I will now technically be in the departure area of the airport.

I was in the SQ lounge Thursday. The restrooms and showers were still closed.
Helpful info, but IMO not worth the effort. There's a pay lounge landside where you can shower. Plaza Premium Arrivals Lounge
And I'm not sure the HKG UC lounge dragons would let you in without a same day departing BP. They are extremely rigid.
You might want to read through this threads for HKIA procedures. Theoretically possible, but it's not going to be normal for the UC.

They absolutely would not let me in in August (arriving UA869) until I showed them a departing BP on TG. Which I thought was a raw deal for TG, because UA should have paid for that visit based both on my arrival in UA J and my UC membership. They were not at all nice about it, either.

Only departure BP will get you into any *A lounge
A UC member card will get you in with same day arriving BP or departing BP at UC only.

Because HKG UC is not an arrival lounge, but departure only lounge.
To access HKG UC, you must be either in transit or departing at HKG. Arrival passengers cannot and will not reach the lounge area.

The net effect of this was that TG I'm sure was charged for my lounge visit (which undoubtedly is why they insisted on seeing the onward BP).
And suggests to me that OP will not be permitted to access the UC at HKG without an onward same day boarding pass.

This is a key question. Assuming I get through Security, I'll arrive at the UC around 8:00pm, with an onward BP for a UA flight at 11:00am the next morning. The Club closes at midnight, so it's not like I can wait until midnight and then try to get in. My goal is to get in, shower, then head into town.

I'd just go to the Plaza Premium Arrivals lounge.

And that's what I don't think is worth the special effort of clearing transit security without a same day BP, then arguing with the UA lounge dragons, then finding someone to escort you back down to the arrivals level (which you cannot reach on your own from the departures level).
I'd just go to the Plaza Premium Arrivals lounge.

Tough call, as it could be a waste of time. The Plaza Arrivals lounge is $75.00 for 2 hours (less if booked through TripAdvisor) or $26.00 for a 30 minute shower, so while I'd prefer not to pay again for something I've already paid for, it might make sense (especially since I was only looking for a shower then leave the airport as soon as possible).

We haven't even talked about the additional distance you may have to cover to get to and from the UC, depending on where your flight arrives. If you arrive at one of the lower number gates, it's going to be an additional 10 minutes each way, minimum. Just sounds like one big hassle to me - last thing I want to deal with after 14 hours in the air.

"Close to impossible"
...as recently discussed on this thread: Possible to exit the HKG transit jail?
