When this occurred in the past it either disappeared by the time you got to the payment screen or no problem to select seats after purchase. Appears to a glitch were the system is not fully recognizing status. Others have switched to united.com versus app.
this was after purchase and I got to the payment screen. 1K line said there was nothing they could do as it wasn't letting them assign E+ seats for us either. Sigh.

E- fair? That would explain it. I wasn’t seeing United First available on your screenshot.

On the FT UA forum many use E- for the non-E+ section of economy
and BE for Basic Economy

I think you meant E- FARE (not fair). The "fair" part confused me.

Charging 1K for E+ seats

Charging 1K for E+ seats on App? I had to give up to change to my preferred seats after I changed my reservation. I will call 1K line for seat changes if this problem persists.

A rare problem, likely caused by a glitch in the reconginizing status. With united.com, logging out, clearing cookies, and restarting has worked.

Perhaps, it is related to weekend system upgrade. I will try again on Monday. Both App and United.com want to charge me for switching to a new E+ seat.

past few times this happened to me it was indeed a weekend schedule update. 1K agent over the phone could not override it either. Was all fine Monday morning.
