UD 747 has long been a bucket list item of mine, and I have had plans for quite some time for a trip to the UK for our 25th anniversary in the summer of 2018 ... was hoping, either through hoarded miles (haven't used any since 2012) or outright cash if necessary, to fly upstairs on a 744 before they were gone for good. Wonder if there will be any options left by that time.

Book a ORD-SFO. Nothing like the upper deck.

As far as people talking about the reliability of a 747, I believe the 787 has an equal record of being delayed or cancelled.

Unless this is truly a temporary swap, I'm surprised that UA didn't down gauge the LAX-LHR 3-class 777 for a 787 instead of SFO. Just about every other long haul wide body out of LA is going to 787's.

Yup. The 744 actually performed quite well this year while UA was having all the problems with the 764 and 772 fleets.

Meanwhile the 789 has had some real teething issues.

I liked flying the 789 in row 6 but would still take the 744 every time so long as I could score UD.

A typically well informed comment

out of touch with reality. And UA's 747-400s were delivered all throughout the 90s, so double

LAX was supposed to be all 787 including LAX-LHR. But UA decided to stick with the 777 and use the 787 for SFO-TLV instead.

I'd suspect this has something to do with GlobalFirst and LHR based passengers.

Nope was switched back to the 777 because the 787 is needed for the SFO - TLV flight. Expect LAX - LHR to go 787 when more aircraft come online.

+1

To the honeymooners above -- just ask UA to move you to Global First on the earlier flight or if you are traveling to a point beyond, route through FRA.
