I don't want anyone to know that my favorite book is Harry Potter, Book 1.

Incessant account locking

Your security questions were answered incorrectly during a sign-in attempt, so your account is currently locked. This protects your account from being accessed by anyone other than you.

... is wrong with United and their password complexity and secret question requirements? The poor ladies in Indonesia or wherever the hell must be sick of me cursing them out. What IT dope came up with this scheme for logging into United.com? It's not like I'm trying to access top secret info!!!!

Looked back through the last 10 pages of this massive thread and didn't see anything on this, but is anyone else having the UA site constantly ask for those stupid security questions to remember the device? I haven't specifically noted how often I have to do it (it's not an every time deal), but I'm tired of telling UA what my favorite ice cream is every two or three weeks, just to check my mileage balance or look at an upcoming reservation.

I know cookies work, because when I go to log in, it has my MP number pre-filled in the form, just asking for my password. Then when I go to log in, it will frequently (but not always) tell me it doesn't recognize my device, have me answer the questions, and then I always click the "Remember this device" option, but still, within a couple of weeks, it asks me again.

When you fill in the answers to the questions on the bottom of the form theres a button to remember this device. Do you activate that button?

Yes, as indicated in the last sentence of my post that you quoted.

I also frequently get asked security questions and it is annoying. I can understand if I have updated my browser but it just seems to be random and at least once a week.

I do notice if I have used multiple device / multiple browsers, a previously verified browsers / device combo needs revalidation -- there seems to be a limit on the number of validated "connections"

Also auto-clearing cookies will create this issue.

Is it possible you have security or privacy software on your computer that is deleting cookies? My office computer encounters that problem, and basically every website which had saved its login gets wiped out every week or two and requires re-entering the info (often a text/SMS code or other annoying 2 factor authentication, or security questions).

Some (many?) browsers automatically update themselves in the background. Maybe your browser had enough of a update to a new version number that it triggers the prompt from united.com? Just guessing here...

This could be it. I use the UA app on my phone and iPad, plus occasionally a browser on one or the other to do stuff that the app cant do, plus the browser on my work laptop. Maybe thats too many for UA to keep track of.

I'm pretty sure it's triggered by connecting on other devices. And yes it's super annoying. Particularly since it's virtually worthless as an actual security measure. Anyone sniffing your connection can steal the answers and thus your log-in. True two-factor can't be beaten so easily.

Does United Have 2FA?

Protecting your MileagePlus account
https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...-security.html

Basic account security tips
The threat of fraud is real, but the good news is that you can guard against a variety of prevalent scams by following a few simple rules. These can be applied to almost anything you do online, not just your MileagePlus account.

You can add an additional layer of security to your most important accounts (like those for your bank, credit cards and primary email address) by enabling two-factor authentication. This is just another way to verify your identity before you log in. With two-factor authentication enabled, youll receive a call, text or email with another unique code that you need to type before successfully logging in. This will make it even more difficult for a hacker to gain access to your information, even if they know your password.

Because this is information about "protecting your MileagePlus account" and it specifically states that "
These can be applied to almost anything you do online, not just your MileagePlus account.[emphasis added]" it seems to imply that United has 2FA. If so, I can't find it. What gives?

Perhaps they think the odd security questions are the second factor?

RNE -- I miss your prognostications. What can you tell us about the future, here?
