The Ground has Shifted- Air NZ Business class awards now available on United.com
One of the aspirational uses of UA miles has been restored.
Over on the NZ website, someone asked about how to obtain seating after obtaining a business class award thru UA. Startling change from the recent past, but I just checked. For instance, Monday April 4 shows business saver availability (80K OW, $30) on NZ1. Didnt go past the initial page to see if it has phantom aspects |

But today there are actually awards available LAX-AKL. Haven't tried booking one. I noted there is no availability on the return.

Finally!!!! Yes!
|
Is it actually bookable to NZ?
With the state of UA.sux today I'd assume it's erroneous. |
If this is true I'd attribute it to NZ finally opening up award space on its flights much more than UA making any changes on its systems.

I just booked a Biz award SFO-AKL nonstop and back on NZ metal on the UA website. 160,000 miles and $69.96 in taxes. I have a UA confirmation number and am now waiting for the rez to ticket. Woohoo ... so far :)
Update: UA website now says "This reservation has been ticketed and confirmed.". |
This is really fantastic news - hope it stays this way!

I hope UA Insider conveys this info to the MP team -- that customers actually care and like it when the awards they are promised can be searched online. Not like the weasely tactic of making people phone in, just to make it technically a little bit harder and have people redeem less as an underhanded barrier.

A pretty interesting read about the squeeze in J on NZ's 787s:

The September flights occurred because of the refit program for the 77E, and was at a time where two aircraft were out of service. The upgrade is now complete. |

Just FYI Air NZ don't fly the 787 to North America.
