Platinum the new silver
An amused observation on my new status. Made platinum last Oct., and that flight was the last upgrade I ever got. It seems that gold must now outrank platinum as I used to get about 30% of my segments upgraded as a gold. Since platinum I have had 0 upgrades. Funny and annoying at the same time...

Anyone who chases status for CPUs these days is bound to be disappointed.
Platinum benefits are substantially better than Silver. The free award changes are particularly important to me.

All route/timing specific. I'm 5/5 on CPU ex-ORD to ROA/DAY and SFO - SNA and 4/4 on RPU, with 2 on ORD-MBJ, ORD-SFO, and SNA-SFO-ORD.

The only status that means anything to UA is GS. Everything else is a marketing lie.

Conversely, more of a head scratcher, today (a Monday), I was CPUed at the 3+ day mark on a LAS-IAH noonish flight. I don't get it sometimes.

+1. Everyone time someone tells me they want to get the "free domestic upgrades" I tell them they better get on some flights 5 years ago!

I turned Gold today, down from Plat. This morning got my CPU notice that I cleared tomorrow's first segment. #4 on the list right now with 5 available on the 2nd segment, might be close on this one.
Either way, 1 for 2 on my first day of Gold isn't bad.
Like others have said, it's all route dependent. If you're a Plat in SFO, forget it. If you're a Plat in PHL or BWI, you're going to do OK.

As everyone should know, January is when we all try to burn those RPUs/GPUs that expire. So CPUs are even harder then. Wasted two on Friday.
But as a corollary, my EWR-DFW flight this Friday cleared me and a companion at T-96 today.

As others have said, it depends what route you're flying. If you fly SFO-IAD or ORD-IAH often then you'll be disappointed. If you fly out of MCO, BWI, or SAT you'll be happy.
Platinum has plenty of worthwhile benefits over Silver and Gold.
