'Refund' Phishing scam?
FYI - received an email this morning from 'Customer Refund Services' (email address shows as [email protected]) saying:
January 14, 2016 PASSENGER: xxxxxx TICKET(S): 016 xxxx xxx xxx REQUEST ID:xxxxxxxx Dear xxxxxx: Thank you for contacting United Refunds. Your request for a refund has been processed. You may verify refund details using the following link https://www.united.com/web/en-us/con...nd.aspx#tabs-2. Please enter your 13-digit United ticket number beginning with 016 (do not include spaces) and your last name. You can also request the status by using the 8-digit Request ID number listed above. Thank you for the opportunity to assist you and we look forward to welcoming you on a future United flight. Sincerely, Customer Refund Services http://www.united.com/web/en-us/cont...ations/refunds FAX: 713-324-1431 I checked my current ticket numbers and the one provided did not match any of them, but FYI. Has anyone else seen something like this? A 'hover' over the web links seems like they are legit on the surface, but my web skills don't go much beyond that (I'm certainly not clicking on anything). |
If the links are genuinely to united.com pages, then it's not a phishing scam.

A quick call to United might be in order.
|
if you copied the email as is and posted it, then the provided links are fine.
they might be different on the actual email important part is what is before ".com" when you hover your mouse over the link |
Could this be for a wifi, baggage or similar charge you wanted to get refunded?
|
Were you expecting a refund and was this the correct amount? If so, you have nothing to worry about. UA often uses placeholder numbers like 00577777777777 (which I just noticed has the old CO prefix bc SHARES).
If you didn't refund a ticket, I'd chalk it up to UA's stellar IT and ignore it. As others said, the links look fine. |

OK, so I'm an idiot (or at the least, scatter-brained). I had forgotten 2 things: 1 - That UA uses 016 numbers for all sorts of things (thanks for the reminders) 2 - That I recently got the UA Club card and had a month remaining on my (gasp) purchased UC membership. UA refunds the pro-rated remainder of UC memberships if you get the card and are already a member... So - $33 coming my way. Not the powerball jackpot, but beats a poke in the eye. Sorry for this thread. Mods - feel free to close :) |
I received the same email a couple weeks ago, shortly after cancelling some award reservations. Seemed legit to me.
And of course, when I tried to track my refund, it resulted in an error page....which of course just confirms it came from United. :) |
