My friend's flight, an hour later, returned to the gate and was cancelled due to maintenance issues. Now she's not leaving until Monday.

Guess what flight my friend was on? Hint: she posted a picture on Facebook of her drinking Guinness.

Maybe she'll get home by the end of the week....

I think she is a shoe-in for maximum EU 261 compensation.

Ok I don't even know what to say about this one. So UA tried to get things back on track for the Hong Kong flights by setting up an extra sector tonight.

8/1 UA 2087 SFO-HKG (N107UA) departing at 1830 and arriving at 2350 (+1).

Well it looks like there was a mechanical delay which pushed departure to 2100. Now the flight is showing as being cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.

As a result now 8/3 UA 862 HKG-SFO cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.

Speaking of flights to Hong Kong, ironically SQ was able to run SFO-HKG (albeit 4 hours late) and as I was taxiing out this afternoon i saw a CX flight taxiing to the runway.

How will UA handle stranded pax: accommodations, meals, etc. ?

Probably not the smartest thing to do but kudos to SQ for trying. They ended up having to divert to TPE after attempting to land in HKG.

A second kudos for the crew not timing out.

so then explain to me how it is that Delta got their flight out on time and back with minimal delay with similar flight times to the cancelled UA SFO flight

Yeah, and with few exceptions, CX did a nice job too.

Are they still planning an extra session to cover the displaced pax? I am taking this flight tomorrow, and don't want a massive oversell situation to put my upgrade at risk.

Doubt it. SFO-HKG flights through Friday are only oversold by ~15. Don't think that's enough to warrant an extra sector.

But they still need to get all the pax from a 747 (each way), going to where they wanted to be.

Of course, UA 860 from GRU-IAD is now delayed until 11:55pm.
Right you are! It was delayed and a replacement bird was brought in, between that extra 14 hours and missing the GRU connecting flights, my journey from IAD to GIG (Via GRU) became a 70 hour ordeal. At least UA put us up in Sao Paolo also.

Funny thing, the website for compensation isn't working.
