Here's an idea - team up with Subway or Togos or Quiznos or someone and offer a very simple free coach meal. A six-inch sub (nothing fancy, a couple choices like ham and cheese, roast beef, turkey, etc), a bag of chips and cookie. All of the advertising the sub chains could want, and at a decent cost to the airlines (a couple-three bucks per bag, maybe less).

HOUSTON, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Airlines and Subway Sandwiches have joined forces to develop a new menu for air travelers who want the meals on their flights to be more like the food they enjoy around town. As a result, each day Continental will be taking off with the equivalent of a 4,000-foot Subway sandwich to serve to 12,000 customers on 116 flights from its Houston and Denver hubs...

Actually, UA wouldn't have to even offer them for free. Just cheaper than the current sandwich, with more stuff. Most people would pay for a sandwich combo from a major chain as BOB.

(And yes, I'm absolutely, 100% serious.)
Great idea, but I don't think the cost would work out .. at the end, would a free Subway sandwich really drive sales?

I didn't ask with my PDB but I asked before they brought out breakfast and the FA had no issues with it. It tasted better than I remembered.

Let's the snacks are an omen, a good one.
I really want United to get back on its feet and be the airline it once was. However, for now I still have to go with Delta and Alaska for travel in the USA and some of the better foreign airlines for international travel (or Delta which is not bad for international travel either in my experience.)

Look at all the positive press they're getting for the high-end waffle snack versus a bag of peanuts.

Had my first stroopwafel on a EWR-RDU flight last week, it hit the spot.
Then, this week I got cheese and crackers RDU-ORD.
I know they're both little things, but they really make the flight more pleasant.

+100. Had my first domestic flight with the cheese and crackers this week and I was surprised by how much more enjoyable it was simply because of that. Further proof that the little do things matter.

Flew UA this weekend and got the Stroopwafel on the way there. Pretty good. And it's nice to see an ingredient list that doesn't require a chemistry degree to understand :P
Got the asian snack mix on the way back, which appear to still be supplied by King Nut even though UA de-hubbed CLE where they are produced. I'm a big fan of the wasabi peas in there, but not a lot of the other stuff that seems to be mostly Corn Pops.

Hi everyone,
Today we’re announcing that we will re-introduce complimentary snacks to United Economy. Beginning in February 2016, customers on thousands of North America and Latin flights will begin receiving these snacks.
Based on departure time, the complimentary snack may vary. Those flying on flights departing before 9:45 a.m. will receive a morning stroopwafel – a Dutch caramel-filled waffle to pair with coffee, tea, or to enjoy on its own. Flights departing after 9:45 a.m. will offer packaged savory snacks, such as an Asian-style snack mix of rice crackers, sesame sticks and wasabi peas or a zesty-ranch mix of mini pretzel sticks, Cajun corn sticks and ranch soy nuts.
We understand the small details matter, and the return of free snacks is among a number of upgrades we’re making to improve your travel experience. For more, see our story on United Airtime.
Thanks,

They aren't supposed to be, as far as I'm aware. Also, I have seen SFO-IAD stiffed of snacks, so I suspect your experience is attributable to the 'typical' inconsistency.

I was on a E145 from EWR-BDL and they did a full with snacks. But that's only a few aisles and is 2-1 config. If your EWR-BOS was on a A320 Family or 737, I can see why they cut the snacks.

No they aren't. But short flights with mainline equipment have trouble the cart down the aisle in time, so they sometimes ditch the snacks or in really short flights, will only offer Water, coffee and OJ.
