Lots of fares even at these prices still require a r/t purchase vs. the two one ways. Ditto for multi-leg/open-jaw tickets, which are usually what I'm on.

I'm lucky in that the aforementioned 'change the return legs mid-trip' usually saves me from the cap. I don't need to even worry about planning for it that way as 75% of my trips wind up changing mid-trip anyway. But if you are on a full fare ticket, that is a good way to solve this problem.

75,000 Award Miles Cap per ticket?

I just read my receipt for an Intl ticket. It says

You can earn up to 75,000 award miles per ticket. The 75,000 award miles cap may be applied to your posted flight activity in an order different than shown.

I know 75,000 miles sound like a lot, but what if you are on multi-leg ticket on F class? They cut you off at 75K? Is this new?

It's been around since revenue-based earning came into effect.

Not sure if crediting to a different program once you reach 75k would work, but that's potentially an option...

Changing a ticket has worked for me, accidentally, in earning more than 75k. Was ticketed AAA-BBB then returning BBB-AAA, all one ticket. Flew AAA-BBB and then had to change date of my return, which of course caused a new ticket number. Ended up getting my full miles, which was over 75k in total, for the whole journey.

Would hope that a ticket expensive enough that it's over the 75k mile cap would have little/no change fees such that you could move the date/connections/etc so you don't lose miles (especially if it's an expensive F that would yield much more than 75k)

I hit it twice with last minute coach tickets to Asia.

It is trivial to get around - just book one ways. In this case they are full Y or B so there is no additional cost.

I got hit on this three times this year, from ORD to LHR and back.

Booking one-ways on USA-Europe doesn't work, as most of the one-ways are as expensive as a round trip.

Generally true if you are buying discount, non-refundable RT coach (or J) tickets, but not so much for fully refundable Y/B type fares. In fact, it can often be cheaper to book as two one-way's rather than a RT with Y/B fares.

How much were these flights earning before the change to revenue based earnings?

Good question. I don't know the answer to that.
