(Non-emergency) On ground collision at LAX - UA1199 and AS543 - 13 Sept 2015
 

So my plane UA1199 just got hit by another plane and are stuck together...

Not serious. Both planes are non emergency but I am sure many travelers will be effected.

It was a big bump. Whole plane had a good shaking. I can see the nose of the other plane just out the right window. A ton of ops crew trying to figure out the situation. Any one at LAX? Happened outside of 73

Was one of these planes still docked at a gate? Or were you both out on the apron/taxiway?

We stopped about 20-25 feet away from the gate and was awaiting being pulled in. Reason was the automatic system failed and the engines were shut off. Looks like the other plane was pulled out of gate and started to leave towards taxi way. Ground ops must not have noticed we were sticking out. Sounds like they wedged their wing somewhere in the back of this plane. Wonder how long this will take...

Ough.... Glad you are ok. Plane shows as a 757-200, sCO #3136. UA shows as 15 minutes late due to "late inbound Aircraft arrival" :)

Any idea what hit you? I assume another UA bird (but possible it was OAL at gate 73).

I can't tell what hit and it is too dark to see. Another passenger told me they saw ground crew picking up chunks of a plane. Fire trucks are out now and based on position it looks like the plane departed from T6. No schedule change for UA717 which was the flight after. LAX to CLE. Probably deem it late due to late arriving aircraft.

On a side note. Seems weird that they would say that the plane was late as we landed early and pulled up to gate 10 minutes before expected arrival minus the 20 ft gap due to mechanical failure

I know DL requires all planes to be tugged in and out to taxiway at LAX due to tight alleyways. The gates just are so tightly spaced for the size aircraft using them.

As for the late arrival, until the plane is fully parked at the gate, it hasn't arrived. Thus you could be 5 feet away and have to wait past arrival time and thus even though 30 minutes early landing you're now a late arrival.

The other plane was a departing Alaska 737 with 182 passengers (plus 6 crew):

Alaska pushed back from the gate and their left winglet went into the right horizontal stabilizer of the UA 757.

this could happen anywhere, but LAX has to be one of the most susceptible airports to ground 'incidents' like this because of the high volume and multiple narrow alleys.

i'm not at all surprised that this happened.

I'm curious who'll be considered at fault. AS for hitting the UA plane or UA for inappropriately parking their aircraft in a position that would cause AS to not realize they would hit. I could at least see AS arguing that it was negligent of UA knowing the automated parking system was out to allow the plane to pull into the gate at all without ground crew and then stop wit its tail to far out. If it had remained on the taxi line like it should have, AS would have known clearance wasn't there. At least would spread the liability around and possibly get AS off the hook for paying for damage to UAL plane.
