Update about United Club access

Dear XXXXX,

We've been working on a variety of improvements to our United ClubSM program. To provide a more productive and relaxing experience, we're investing more than $100 million in renovating existing locations and building new spaces with expanded seating areas, more power outlets and upgraded Wi-Fi. We're also investing in a brand new complimentary food menu that you can now find at our hub locations across the U.S. and will be available soon at the rest of our locations.

To maintain and further improve the United Club experience, we're announcing the following change to our program:

■ Effective August 18, 2016, a same-day boarding pass for all United Club customers, including members, will be required for United Club access.

United Club membership is a benefit of your United MileagePlus Club Card. With a United Club membership, you can still bring your spouse and children under 21, or up to two guests, into any United Club location.

Thank you for being a United MileagePlus Club Cardmember, and we look forward to creating an even more comfortable and premium United Club experience for you.

Customers can still reserve a conference room to use, with or without a same-day boarding pass. We will no longer issue gate passes for other uses.

  2. What about access after a redeye flight? Will this qualify as a "same-day" BP?
Yes, you will still be eligible to access the United Club after arriving off of a redeye flight.

  3. Will I be able to come in if Im flying on another carrier?
Yes, you may use a same-day boarding pass on any carrier.

  4. What if my flight departs early in the morning, the following day (e.g. 12:30am)?
Yes, you will still be eligible to access the United Club.

Please. I would wager that most folks use the UCs while actually traveling, and the airline should rightly cater to that group.

Doesn't really impact me - I don't go to a UC unless I am at the airport, which I will only be at if I am flying that day.

I use the club several times a year when picking up a spouse/relative and the plane is delayed (happens quite frequently). I also use the club (and gate pass) several times a year when my children and/or spouse is flying and I am not with them. THIS is part of what I paid thousands for........

I would agree, hence why I don't see this is such a problem that United feels they must reduce benefits.

+1 with United's on time performance, club access for late arrivals is something I have used several times. Or to wait for someone meeting me from another flight we'd timed to arrive at close to the same time, and their flight was late. The same day boarding pass should be ok here, but I've seen the rule before to be interpreted as same day AND outbound airport.

None of these amount to hundreds of people a day clogging up clubs, it might be a few dozen at most spread out across the entire club network. It's just another bad policy that creates more ill-will with customers. Savvy for sure!

Starting in 2016: United Club Access Only for Same-Day Travel

I for one will use United club two times a year for in person meetings when someone is connecting through DEN and has too tight a connection. This past year I gate passed four times at LAS for the same reason and once at DCA.

It was one of the reasons I bought the 3 year pass. However, if that benefit goes away, I will never join again. It is very helpful in IRRPROPS but with a quieter place to do business it serves no function,, I'll happily let the cardholders have it.

Certainly though, this change for non-fliers isn't going to have any noticeable impact on crowding. There are very few people who are flying AA, but decide they'd like to walk half a mile to the T2 lounge at ORD for free hummus and an IKEA chair. And yes I know all airports aren't that way, but I believe the principle will generally hold true.

Pricing influences people way more than a silly rule like this. This rule would keep me out of the club maybe once every 2-3 years. The price increase will keep me out 50 times per year.

Again, this is not about overcrowding and I can't believe it will save money. I haven't yet seen in this thread a plausible explanation of why UA would do this, other than those that point out DL has this policy.

I hope that they have additional tricks up their sleeve to alleviate the overcrowding. Several changes like this might actually have an effect.

yet again, another seemingly nonsensical and decidedly unfriendly change with deafening silence from UA. UA can't hardly get a plane off the ground on time this summer, but thank goodness they have a team of SVPs working on issues that matter to flyers such as UA club access by undesirable, dues-paying members :roll eyes:

I've grown used to the amateurish management, but the lack of communication remains disheartening.

I'm not sure what UA thinks it is doing since they don't then respond into runaway threads like this one.

If this is United's remedy to address overcrowding, it's just another arranging of the deck chairs type of solution.

I can just see it now, 24 hour fitness, is so successful at selling memberships, and god forbid people actually come to use the gym, hum how do we solve this problem?

Stupid SVP suggest: Oh, I know we'll just limit access to when people can come.

Smart CEO says: wait a minute won't someone start a class action against us? Or worse they will cancel and take their membership to Golds. No, I think we should be intelligent and expand, so we can sell yet more memberships, and make yet more money.

Only the idiots at United would see the success of something as a disaster they must mitigate.

I call it the mushroom method of management, keep everyone in the dark and shovel horse manure on them, hoping something wonderful will grow. Works for mushrooms right?

I don't think one can reasonably compare a health club to an airport club. One model is based on overselling with a large number of non-active, but paying, members. The other is based on serving a captive audience (quite literally) with literally no opportunity to expand in the areas where capacity is most constrained. Can you image hearing, "I'm sorry the LGA club is full. Perhaps you'd like to try our JFK location instead."

Another devaluation. I have very rarely used (Admirals, CO) clubs when not flying that particular airline, but probably <5% of visits. The aping of DL continues
