buying miles for the upgrade

Looking for 2 business/first saver awards to Asia.
Looks like this will be 160k miles and I have 70+k
90k miles bought cost $2200.00

Tickets bought for award plus miles come out to $800.00 plus 30k miles plus $600.

That's $2800.00 plus 60k miles versus paying $2200.00 and using my 70k miles

I thought these scenarios usually came out equal but buying the miles looks like a winner. Assume I can pick up a Chase credit card and get bonus miles for putting the millage purchase on the new card?

Thoughts?

And Thanks.

I guess you are buying the miles straight up?

You can try a dummy booking and see the price. I can currently buy 90,000 miles for $1800.
Either way in your scenario, buying the miles looks like a less expensive way to go.

Are you looking to 2 one-way business savers or 2 round-trip savers. If the latter, then it would be 320k for two tickets. There is a cheaper option to buy miles - award accelerator. This is often cheaper than outright buying miles. Make a reservation - preferably a long-distance international one on UA flights (if you can). Once the reservation tickets, you will see an option to buy additional miles. These miles offered are typically in large blocks of 20k, 30k or even more based on the original flight distance. Buy just the award miles. They will typically range between 2c to 3c per mile. Once the miles deposit, cancel the ticket within 24 hours (very important). Your award miles should still stick around. I currently have an offer for $400 for 20k miles or $600 for 30k miles. so you need to buy 90k miles, that could cost you $1800.
