There is only one issue: Does the item fit in the sizer, e.g. is it of the published dimensions or less. If so, it is OK.

Onboard, it will not be permitted to "stick out" from under the seat.

On UA you can carry two bags so no need for it to be inside.

That's useful to know about the risk of having to gate check it. In that case, I'll carry a smaller bag inside and have in-flight stuff handy.
How about using some sort of bungee-like compression strap that you can take off once you're on the plane?

However, the bottom sticks out slightly when not squished - so the dimension that should be under 22cm is more like 30cm.

Is this likely to be a problem? I can take a smaller bag if needs-be, but this one has good ergonomics and is well padded. The laptop bag is an older model of this bag (with slightly different dimensions) if that helps visualise it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/wenger-Swi...-/152307293428

Hope this is in the right place. Please move thread if not - thanks!
UA uses inches, not cm. So you 30cm bag is well under the 22in size requirement.

The 22cm dimension limit is the 9in one, I assume.

Thanks - yes, I did mean the 9in dimension.

The bag comes with a bungee strap - good idea! If it looks like size is a potential issue, it's no bother to tie it up so it fits within UA's allowance.

Curious which model you have? My older one doesn't fit the sizer.

TUMI - Carry on sizing

This may be a little of topic but I am planning on purchasing a TUMI Carry on luggage piece.

TUMI has two categories for this piece - Continental (22x16x9) and International (22x14x9)

I would prefer to go with the slightly bigger size, however I am mainly traveling internationally between MEL/SYD - LAX and was wondering if I would encounter any trouble for the 2 inches? I usually have a duffle bag that would exceed the size by a lot more and never had any United rep even check my bag or the size.

However, I just wanted to get some frequent flyer opinions on this before purchasing the carry on bag.

Thanks!

I was denied yesterday by Lufthansa for the larger carry on. Fortunately a different agent sympathized and let me board with it.

There was AMPLE room for it on the 747-8.

Well, I used to fly lufthansa a lot german airlines and service is strict by rules under all circumstances in most cases.

I only fly United now days and looking for some experience with it. I did not think the 2 inches would be a big issue - but the piece would be useless if I get told not to bring it on the plane each time.

Could you encounter trouble, sure:

https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/tra...eCarry-On.aspx

Will you? Doubtful. It'll fit, provided you get it onboard.

It depends if fitting in the sizer vs. fitting onboard is more important to you.

Thanks that very helpful, it is actually the alpha 2 i am looking at. Given the 2inch difference in width would still makes the piece fit into the sizer it would just stick out, well 2 inch. I guess the smaller is the safer bet, and the larger one just a little more risky.

Just as a point of comparison, I've taken my 21x15x8 spinner on domestic UA mainline and international LH flights and no one batted an eye. IME, GAs will challenge bags based on relative depth and height. So width usually goes unnoticed.

I'm previously a Antler size zero guy. Those bags are cheap and I usually get 300k out of them, but they're EOL now. I love the looks of the B&R bags - how do these hold up to being checked? Does B&R take care of the fabric too?

Any other great, light-weight, space efficient bags to look at?

I have never had any issue with the Continental. GAs don't seem to care about width, since it just means sticking up out of the top of the sizer (but still going in). This is just domestic, though.
