ORD meltdown Jan 9, 2015 (gate availability)

Just arrived at ORD on UA254 from DEN. Parked out by the hangers (not the regular penalty box) with at a dozen other mainline aircraft. Captain said all the gates are occupied and it would be at least an hour until ours was available. Anyone know what's going on?

Apparently there are 30 aircraft out there waiting for a gate!
Some are starting to complain - to no avail - that the 2 hour make is approaching.

Must only be awful over T1. United mainline is running 45% delayed today (AA is 29%). It's regionals are between 24% and 53% while Envoy is only 38%.

Latest update is at least 2 hours now. Captain's latest announcement is that there are over 40 aircraft parked right now waiting for gates. Captain says "I really have no idea what's going on or when our gate will be available".

At two hours they have to provide food and beverage, and at 3 hours they're in violation.

Doesn't the tarmac delay rule kick in at three hours?

Pilot starting to argue with ramp controller saying the he - and they - were going to have issues at the 2 1/2 hour make and were they prepared. He didn't get much of a response.
He indicated they had to start things with passengers at 2 hours and then he reminded the ramp controller that certain things were required to start happening at 2 1/2 hours - I guess to avoid passing the 3 hour mark.

Meltdown in ORD and bag woes in DEN (http://www.usatoday.com/story/todayi...nver/21422451/). Yep, must be the well-run United Airlines! LMAO.

Wouldn't be surprised if the fuel line issue is coming up again (this happened last winter too) but (based on the FlightAware stats) AA is dealing with it a lot better than UA. A quick check of UA's Twitter and AAs seems to generally confirm that UA has a very big problem (bad growing) and AA is doing mostly fine.

On the upside, Captain just declared open bar for the plane while we wait. He is clearly pissed.

not sure why it would be a problem today. it was clear skies and sunny in Chicago today. But, I'd be pissed too. This happens too often.

Happened last night as well. We sat and would find out in 20 min, and then after 25 min we were told it would be about 25-30 min which it was.

Hopefully UA is using T5 as a reliever.

So much for the CLE hub. Never had that problem here. Airport won star awards for on time operations.

United has no control over ground control.
