And as you'd expect, May 28th UA99 MEL to LAX cancelled due to lack of aircraft

So how long til UA pulls out

Given that AA will now be flying the route?

Up to 5 airlines now if my count is right.

Well I guess it depends which Australian city AA flies to, which won't be announced until later today: Breaking: American Airlines tipped to fly to Australia

Right now for AU-USA nonstop, there's:
VA, QF on BNE-LAX
VA, QF, DL, UA on SYD-LAX
QF, UA on MEL-LAX
UA on SYD-SFO
QF on SYD-DFW

Reported to be LAX-SYD. AA to Fly LAX-SYD

Always check the FT forum first

This is likely to be accompanied by QF decreasing capacity. Not your most robust airline right now.

And SFO-SYD on UA.

My money is on UA pulling out of LAX-SYD quickly - too much competition. That being said, I have to think that LAX-SYD is doing better than LAX-MEL.

And now SFO-SYD on Qantas come December. Good to see some competition on this nonstop route again.

Operational delay UA863 6/21/15

Currently showing a 20 min delay. Not sure the reason - looks like thick fog descending on San Francisco currently (20:00 h) but SFO from the UC still clear. Also may be fog in Sydney for Monday morning.

Oddly the LAX flight has a 30 minute departure delay too which will result in a 3 minute early arrival at SYD.

Could it have something to do with the SYD curfew?
It seems odd both LAX and SYD have an operational delay.
Could both be waiting for inbound connections?

I feel like those kind of departure delays are not unusual, trying to avoid hitting Sydney before curfew... (Written onboard UA870, which is going well so far )

Okay, yes that makes most sense given the 839 also delayed 30 min, favourable tail winds and the SYD curfew.

Yup, not uncommon for the half of the year when the arrivals are very early morning. If the winds are strong they will delay departure so as not to arrive early.

Okay just as a postscript to this flight.

We ended up departing ~23:00 h due to maintenance issue with overhead reading lights that required repairing.

However, to add to the maintenance woes the flight went out without Wi-Fi, no in seat power nor entertainment system. It was a dark quiet cabin throughout the flight.

UA has offered compensation in2 the form of a $25 voucher or 1250 miles - I took the latter - whooppee!
