PCU (Premium Cabin Upsell) Nets extra PQM's and can be done at purchase or anytime before checkin if prompted. This will book into a business/first bucket.
UFC (Upgrade For Cash) is done at checkin (online, counter, lounge, gate) and will not earn extra PQM's.

Some good advice from the self proclaimed thought leader in travel:

One Simple Insight Helps You Time Your Upgrades and Increase Your Success Rate

hint: don't expect upgrades during the busiest business travel windows on popular routes.

Thanks for reference/advice LarkSFO. It was posted for others to know and see if non-1K would be offered at other pricing.

And the price for no-status pax is probably $199 or $229.

Just Nabbed my Greatest Buy-Up Ever

Flying IAD-LAX on a K fare for $158. The plane is a international, 3-class 777-200 coming from LHR.

At check-in and with 43 people on the UG list for Business, offered a buy-up to Business for $459. Took it and booked into Z. ALSO, was placed at the top of the Global First UG list with 3 open F seats and 11 people waiting for UG to Global F.

Is the "double upgrade" as rare as a unicorn or does that happen often?

I'm not sure that technically counts as a double upgrade since you paid up to the Z fare. On the other hand, I doubt the pricing was based on any published fare, so maybe you could call it a double upgrade.

In any event, certainly a nice score

regarding my copay+miles upgrade refund after buying up via the app after check-in: I did wind up having to call to get them to redeposit my miles/refund my co-pay, but they did so pretty readily once the situation was explained.

Route: LA-IAH-ATL
Fare Class: K

Regional cleared LA-IAH, waitlisted for IAH-ATL.

Offered buy-up for $989.

Although hard to resist, I declined.
