MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge
Posted Friday, January 1, 2021

We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to participate in our 2021 Premier® Status Match Challenge promotion, offering top-tier flyers of many other airlines a comparable status in the MileagePlus program. This offer is valid for requests received between January 5, 2021, and June 30, 2021.

Customers who have Star Alliance™ Silver or Gold status are excluded from this offer.

Program details

If you submit your request before June 30, 2021, and meet the criteria to participate in the Premier status match offer, your account will be upgraded to Premier Silver, Premier Gold or Premier Platinum status for 120 days based on the level you hold in your current frequent flyer program.

To keep the matched Premier status for the remainder of the 2021 program year, you will need to earn a certain number of Premier qualifying flights (PQF) AND Premier qualifying points (PQP) on flights operated by United or United Express® within the 120-day Offer Period.* The number of both PQF and PQP you must earn depends on the Premier status level you are matched to in MileagePlus.

Submit your Status Match request

To be considered for Premier status through this promotion, please complete this MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge form. We will send you an email to let you know if your request is approved.

Required information:
  • MileagePlus account number (If you are not yet a member, join today.)
  • Valid email address on your MileagePlus account
  • Copy of your most recent mileage summary or 2021 membership card for the frequent flyer program you are matching from. It must clearly identify your name, current elite status, including your status expiration date or validity period, which should be valid through the duration of the current calendar year. (Please note that many digital frequent flyer program membership cards do not include an expiration date.)
Please allow 7-14 business days for a response and for your account to be upgraded.

Please note:
  • Offer is not valid for members who have participated in the MileagePlus status match program or received a Premier Status exception within the last 5 years.
  • Members who participated in the 2020 Premier status match program and were not successful in qualifying for a Premier status through the offer will be allowed to request a match in the 2021 program, provided all other terms are satisfied.
  • Members who hold elite status because of a trial or temporary elite status in the other airline program, are not eligible for the MileagePlus Premier status match program.
  • Premier membership materials will be not issued for the 120-day Offer Period. You may enjoy Premier benefits on United- or United Express-operated flights by providing your account number when making reservations or at check-in. During the 120-day Offer Period, you may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partner airlines, including access to Star Alliance lounges.
  • Through this offer, you will not be able to qualify for a higher Premier status level than the one you are matched to in MileagePlus. For example, if you are matched to Premier Silver, you will not be able to earn Premier Gold status through this offer, even if you will fly more than the 6 PQF and earn more than 2,000 PQP on flights operated by United or United Express during the Offer Period. However, you will be able to qualify to a higher status level if you reach one of the published qualification thresholds for Premier status.
  • Upon meeting both the PQF and PQP requirements to retain Premier Platinum status through this offer, members will be awarded 20 PlusPoints, which will be credited to their account within 7-10 business days. Premier members can earn 40 PlusPoints upon meeting all standard published qualification requirements of Premier Platinum status and 280 PlusPoints upon meeting all the standard published qualification requirements of Premier 1K® status.
  • If you are unable to complete both the PQF and PQP requirements within the 120-day Offer Period, your matched MileagePlus Premier status will expire, and you may be returned to a lower earned Premier level, or general member status, at United's sole discretion.
  • Qualifying PQF and PQP must be posted to your MileagePlus account.
Earned 2021 Premier status: Customers who earn Premier status through this promotion will have their accounts updated in the system within five to seven business days of completion and posting of the outlined PQF and PQP requirements for the status level matched to in MileagePlus. Earned 2021 Premier status is valid through January 2022. The MileagePlus status is valid through January 2023 for customers who earn Premier status through this promotion on or after July 1, 2021.

*For customers who meet the PQP and PQF requirement of this promotion on or after July 1, 2021, status is valid through January 2023, unless a higher Premier level is earned. Go to mileageplus.com/premier for more information on the MileagePlus Premier program.

MP Status Goal PQM or PQS requirements in 90 days (UX/UA only)
Silver Fly 7,000 PQM or 8 PQS
Gold Fly 12,500 PQM or 15 PQS
Platinum Fly 18,000 PQM or 22 PQS

  • Flights must be posted to the MileagePlus account in order to qualify.
  • MileagePlus award travel does not qualify for this offer.

MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge {New 2021 terms}

So UA matched my DL status. I have some travel on UA and LH with it all ticketed by UA. Couple questions:
  1. For the status match/challenge: only the flights on UA metal count toward it, right?
  2. I got matched to PS, so do I get the PS bonus on the flights while I'm in a "challenge" status?
Thanks,
Dave.

Hello all
Does anyone know if one signs up for a challenge, when is the status updated? Is it immediate or on the nominated start date of the challenge period (ie the period during which one has to fly the relavent challenge target)? The approval email had the correct date of when I nominated to start the challenge in a week. I was hoping to use the Gold status to grab Economy Plus. Thank you!

I am interesting in the answer to this question as well. In particular, I want to know the estimated wait time from when you send them an email to when they match it.

I want to match AS Gold to UA Gold. I can meet the challenge with two first class round trips from SFO to Hawaii, but getting two trips in a 3 month window is kind of tight (so I don't want to apply too early -- but then again, I don't want to apply too late and have my first trip not count)

There's no way to know; sometimes they reply same day and sometimes it takes a week. The form only lets you choose a start date +/- 14 days, I believe. Just make sure to choose the right start date and submit the request as early as possible — i.e., no sooner than 14 days — before the first flight. They often erroneously start the challenge on the day it's processed, which will require a call or email to MileagePlus.

As detailed elsewhere, the people handling the status matches aren't famous for great customer service. They're kind of the opposite of whom one would expect to be handling/welcoming people who want to switch over to UA from rival airlines.

If your requested challenge starts on, e.g., Jan. 15, I'd expect your new status to start then, too. I'm sure there are anomalies, though. Have you logged in at United.com? If your status was immediately upgraded, you'll see it there.

Oh, I didn't realize that there was a form that lets you choose the start date (I've only done this for one airline before, and that was just an email). Thanks, that makes things much easier. It sounds like I should book the flight first, and then 2 weeks before my departure, request the match to start on the day of my departure.

I would not cut it that close - allow a little buffer, such as a week.

A buffer between the challenge request and the desired start date, or between the start date and one's first flight? I don't see the need for a week's buffer for the latter, as long as a person doesn't move up his first flight and forget to modify the challenge start date.

UA is known to occasionally run slow from time to time in getting the status challenges in place -- so if they are slow, you can probably get flight credit, but you may have missed the benefits on the flight.

It may just be a personal thing but with no buffer, there is no room for the unexpected. There are regular postings who waited too late to request status challenge or those that waited too close to the 24-hour cancellation window or don't get the status run unto 31 Dec and then life happens --

I'll be in paid first class so I'm not too worried about status benefits in-flight. As long as I get the extra miles and the PQM count towards the match I'll be happy.

Would this idea work for a status match on United?

About 4 years ago, I requested a status match on United - they granted it and the week after I was matched, I had to stop traveling to take care of my family and be local.

This year, I requested a new one to match my AA status. I will be flying a United route very frequently over the next 10 months. They obviously denied because of their 5 year rule.

I have a nice chunk of miles in my current United account currently, but was curious I just create a new MileagePlus account, would UA match my status, and then I can combine accounts later? I would be giving them about $40,000 worth of business this year, but I am only doing it if I can match my status now.

Has anyone tried this, or would it work?

You can definitely ask for status challenge based on x spend (or miles flown) in 90 days, during which time you get the trial UA status.

I don't recommend it. This would be a clear violation of the program rules and grounds to remove all your miles.

Clear violation of MP rules. You are risking account termination (both accounts) and forfeiture of miles.

Spending 40k probably means you are flying paid J mostly. In this case, you'd rise up the ranks fairly quickly and you get most of the status benefits anyway. What exactly are you trying to get out of the higher status, other than perhaps fast mileage accrual?
