I feel like I missed an opportunity last year - I had ZRH-EWR cancelled last February, got no kind of compensation at all. Rebooked from E+ on UA to E- on LX (miserable flight in a window seat)...and then had to endure obvious circling around JFK in the clouds before landing in the middle of a blizzard and taking forever to taxi to the gate. I got ORC, but I wish I had been reading FT then...sounds like I could have gotten something more out of this situation?

We were scheduled on it on June 6. We were going to see the Shroud of Turin. First it was a 75 minute delay, then by the time we got to the C75 club it was 2 hours, then pushed to 4 hours, then finally cancelled around 8pm or so. Unfortunately by that time almost everything was gone, and what was left was sold out or had no connections on the Europe side. We begged them to re-accommodate us on the Emirates flight out of JFK at 10:30 as we had no checked bags, but inventory control wouldn't do it, and by the time the flight cancelled, we would not have made JFK due to traffic from the Belmont Stakes.

I was traveling with my Dad who lives in Manhattan, so we just went home, no hotel vouchers needed.

I left JFK back to LA Sunday as a trip in vain/futile trip and they told me that EWR did send people to JFK blindly Saturday night (must have been from concourse special services desk, as the club wasn't offering it) but they couldn't do anything for them and put them up.

I wonder if it has to do with few flights out of EWR being flow with sUA 777 IPTE equipment.

I cannot imagine the payout UA has on the MXP side due to EU regulations.

Why can't they get planes to MXP and back?

06/07 UA968 and 06/08 UA969 EWR-MXP-EWR cancelled again due to MX. That's four times in eight days and counting.

Agents at EWR C-UC were all a buzz about cancellations. I'm surprised they're surprised.

that is surprising considering they have to re-book and accommodate close to 1000 pax every day due to MX.

in addition to the flights already listed (EWR-BOM-EWR and EWR-MXP-EWR) the following ones were also cancelled today:

UA844 GRU-ORD 772 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance (yesterday's outbound already late due to maintenance)
UA855 LIM-IAH 763 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance (yesterday's outbound 5 hrs late due to maintenance)
UA881 ORD-NRT 744 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance therefore also tomorrow's UA882 NRT-ORD cancelled due to aircraft maintenance
UA29 EWR-LHR 772 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance therefore tomorrow's UA28 LHR-EWR cancelled due to aircraft maintenance
UA59 AMS-IAH 772 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance
UA1097 SJO-IAH 738 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance

I actually think the sUA 777 IPTE may be scheduled with one too many airplane. I ran all of the sUA 777 tail numbers with 3-class interiors and could not find one that didn't operate Saturday night. I wonder if a 767 or a sCO 777 is down that they needed to pull the MXP plane. If anyone has the tail number that 968 was to be on 6/6 or 6/7 please share.

On a side note, they sent a 2nd MXP flight tonight with a 764 to help get that mess cleaned up. 266 people x 1200 Euro for the 6/7 flight and 266 people x 600 Euro for the 6/8 flight = 478,800 Euros shelled out for the 2 MXP-EWR flights cancelled for EU rule 261.

Except UA is not going to volunteer EU261 compensation to anyone on those flights, and only a small percentage will persevere through all the barriers UA places to recovery. Indeed, they may claim this was an "extraordinary event" and deny all EU261 claims. Would not be the first time.

UA saves a great deal of money because many / most displaced customers don't know what they're entitled to under EU261. So they don't ask, and UA certainly isn't going to tell them.
