Anyone know the back story on this? I did not see delays or cancellations of the LAX-PVG flights in the last day or two.
Looks like UA 199 PVG-LAX (N19951) cancelled on April 20th due to aircraft maintenance. That is why you see an extra sector on April 21 UA 2089 PVG-LAX. They are using N19951 to run the regular scheduled flight UA 199 on 4/21 and N13954 to run the extra sector.

Looks like as a result of the above with only 5 787-900 in the fleet that they have to cancel 4/20 UA 98 LAX-MEL (N19951). The return flight on 4/22 UA 99 MEL-LAX is still showing on time using frame N26952.

Actually upon further investigation it looks like on 4/20 UA 99 MEL-LAX (N26952) cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.

So to sum things up:

4/20 UA 199 PVG-LAX (N19951) cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.
4/20 UA 98 LAX-MEL (N19951) cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.
4/20 UA 99 MEL-LAX (N26952) cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.

I guess when you have 2 of 5 787-900 have maintenance issues it breaks the UA schedule as we see from above.

Thanks for the additional info! I'm currently scheduled be on the N13954 LAX - MEL after it gets back from PVG.

Have any of the 789's been much more prone to MX and CX than others? Or are they all operating around the same dispatch rate?

Why, in the cases of these cancellations, couldn't UA have flown 772s or 744s? They must have a spare or two around. Are they that stretched due to their numerous MX?

UA doesn't keep any 744's at LAX anymore. 772's limited to 2 (for the LHR and SYD flights). Those are less problematic than the 787's, but not by much unfortunately.

The saga from the 20th continues today:
199 (PVG to LAX) - 2.5 hour MX delay.
2089 (PVG to LAX make-up from the 20th) - 1.5 hour delay / inbound aircraft from LAX had an hour MX delay.

United is so unreliable for International flights - amazing how any corporate account that does a lot of international routes would stick with these guys...

To complicate it further, 787 have all sCO crews, 772/747 would require sUA cabin crew (which is has been shrunk as of late). Not very conducive to a switch-a-roo. Also with the extended flight times, crews time-out rather quickly when there is a Mx issue.

So as expected United is ignoring the provisions of EC 261/2004 and just making stuff up. Late arrival of incoming aircraft is not and extraordinary circumstance or force majeure (which term the CSR does not understand), but they are still stonewalling. I'll keep you posted.

Both UA870 and UA840 have been cancelled. The 2 planes are sitting in MEL due to severe SYD weather.

4/22 UA 870 SYD-SFO cancelled
4/22 UA 840 SYD-LAX cancelled

DEN-NRT (UA 139) was delayed today due to MX. Ended up departing 4:05 behind schedule. Yay Dreamliner...

UA923 LHR-EWR was cancelled on 4/21 for MX Load was very light (19 in Business, probably no more than 15 in Economy).

It was handled extremely poorly.First there was a nosegear problem, which was fixed at the gate so we pushed back 30 min late. Then, there was an instrumentation problem after we pushed back. Instead of pulling us back into the gate (which was still open) they put us at a remote stand and made us sit there while the totally empty UA 28 left from the gate next door (booked to 13 out of 50 in Business). Oh, they did take one passenger -- a deadheading captain, onto a tarmac transfer minivan and whisked him over while all of the rest of us watched.

They finally brought a bus to offload us back into the terminal to be rebooked but that took a long time to do (citing Heathrow security considerations).

By that time, UA 28 had left, and UA 801 the noon flight was full so they offered us the 4pm or 6pm flights; they of course took care of the 4 GS members proactively, but nothing for the rest of us and no automatic system protections in place.

I ran to the front of the queue and was able to get them to rebook me on BA to PHL.

We all understand that things happen, but what was striking to me was how indifferent and even hostile the ground staff were. To be honest, the FAs were great. They were doing their best to talk to the ground staff to get us on to 28 and then when it was clear that wouldn't happen, get us off the plane quickly, and even they were really embarrassed by the whole situation.

Not a delay or cancellation but 29 EWR - LHR which is typically flown with an sCO 2-cabin 777 is being flown tonight by an sUA 3-cabin 777 tail 2888. FLT # remains 29.

So, then how is it Virgin Australia and Delta both get there flights off the ground. They left a few hours late but still managed to get the flight from point A to point B. I just don't understand these cancellations. It doesnt seem that they even try at all to complete the flight as scheduled.

UA 858 B747 PVG to SFO cancelled on 4/22 due to aircraft maintenance

(although not a international flight, still a widebody) UA 218 B747 HNL to ORD cancelled on 4/21 due to aircraft maint

UA 252 B747 HNL to IAH cancelled on 4/21 - aircraft maintenance

And tonight, both of these cancellations are due to severe weather in the network. They are the LAX and SFO flights to SYD. The flights are still more then 12 hours off but I guess there aren't any T7 spares...

863/839 SFO/LAX to SYD B777.

Looks like that is the fall-out from the wx-cxld inbounds from SYD.

Are sCO crews not allowed in sUA 772/747s?
