Anyway, you shouldn't need a third-party paid subscription to see the fare rules for existing bookings, but it seems to be fairly standard practice across the industry.

As others have said, short of a dummy booking, I have never been able to coax the fare rules out. Having said that, I have bought a number of fares that were refundable that still had a change fee for changes so that doesn't sound out of the ordinary.

I've also always wondered about fare rules post-purchase. Is it possible to request the fare rules for a ticket by calling United? Obviously they are stored somewhere...

I agree; filing a DOT complaint is a ridiculous suggestion.

Writing to the DOT to request that they require fare rules to be delivered during purchase or available on the website post-purchase, on the other hand, would make sense. But it's silly to file a regulatory complaint for a regulation that doesn't exist.

And lest anyone think I'm being petty, it matters -- the more frivolous complaints there are, the less likely real complaints are to be taken seriously.

It's a fallacy that DOT consumer complaints have to pertain to an existing rule. The DOT expressly welcomes complaints that may be the basis for rulemaking actions. (See DOT quote below.)

I can see some reasoning that if a customer wants to read the fare rules after purchase, it's often (though not always) with the aim of getting money back from UA, hence not something UA may want to make as easy or pain-free as possible. A less informed customer is a less strong customer.

Whereas the customer reading the rules before booking, is a customer getting ready to give money to UA, so you do what the DOT requires and you offer that customer the fare rules, but you display it in an unattractive/unreadable format, using non-fixed width fonts, making it very hard to find penalties and the like without actually knowing where to find them.

I'm assuming here that any relevant DOT obligations are fulfilled when the display of the rules is offered before purchase.

I often want to know what the underlying fare basis is for "P" tickets since that determines the likelihood of specific flights being eligible for free SDC.

I could use some help on this fare construction.

I am hoping to buy a business class ticket from SFO to LHR, and an economy ticket back. Priced as a separate one-way, the business class ticket is super expensive, but it's more reasonable as a round trip even if the return is in economy.

I stumbled across one combination where the first leg is deep discount business class, the return is economy flexible. Does this mean I can get the economy flexible leg refunded after I fly the business leg? Here are the fare rules:

No, the most restrictive policy governs the entire ticket. Even if that weren't the case, it would be repriced as a one-way if you tried to refund it anyway.

I need some help finding my change rules (after departure) on United AirChina flight.

It was originally booked with CA, but they changed some flights, so they reissued the ticket, but my first flight was with UA.

All I have is booking number/ticket number, but I can't find anything on United.com about my fare rules.

Tried Saudi, it didn't accept my info.

Please help.

Does your ticket start with 016 or 999? If it starts with 016, call UA and ask what your change rules are. If it starts with 999, call CA.
