CHICAGO, Oct. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced the airline is expanding its partnership with Hertz to offer elevated travel benefits to members of the airline's MileagePlus loyalty program, at Hertz and its Dollar and Thrifty brands become United's exclusive car rental partners beginning Nov. 1. Special perks are also in store for MileagePlus Club and Presidential Plus Card members.

MileagePlus members who book with Hertz may earn the following per rental:
1,250 miles – MileagePlus Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members;
1,000 miles – MileagePlus Premier Gold and Premier Silver members;
750 miles – Primary cardmembers of MileagePlus credit cards from Chase; or
500 miles – MileagePlus general members.
MileagePlus members will continue to receive discounts when they book Hertz car rentals via United.com.
Members renting with Dollar and Thrifty will still earn 50 miles per day for rentals of one to four days and 500 miles for rentals five days or longer.

Travelers who reserve car rentals before Nov. 1 will accrue the higher level of benefits available if they pick up their vehicle on or after Nov. 1.

Elite Benefits

Additionally, beginning Jan. 1, 2015, MileagePlus Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members and primary MileagePlus Club and Presidential Plus Card members may sign up for complimentary Hertz President's Circle status in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program, with benefits that include:
Confirmed availability of standard-equipment economy through full-size, four-door vehicles in the United States and Canada, with a minimum 48-hour advance reservation; and
Confirmed one-car-class upgrade availability at all participating locations in the United States and Canada and select European locations.

It isn't a lot, but it is "something." It has value to me because I rent about 50 weeks a year plus some weekends. 95% of these rentals are business; I get reimbursed for those. If I can get a free week or a couple of free weekend rentals on personal trips, that saves me money. The Hertz benefit is better than what Avis gives, which is nothing meaningful other than airline miles. So my decision is made: I'll get more UA miles from Hertz than AA miles from Avis, and I'll get a slightly valuable car rental reward benefit from Hertz. I'll go with Hertz. The only thing I'm giving up is upgrades; Hertz President's Circle is a one class upgrade whereas Avis President's Club is a two class upgrade. From my point of view rewards are more important than upgrades.

I'm in the airport now headed to my final destination with a Hertz reservation. Now that I'm President's Circle it will be interesting to see if there's a change.

Wish I could take advantage of this but my company requires us to use National/Enterprise.

Could you still get the PC status and see if the others will do a status match for you? I thought upthread someone mentioned doing that.

According to an upthread post Avis President's Club gives a 2 car upgrade. Does anyone know Avis's policy for status match?

How long do the United miles take to post? I rented first weekend of the year and have yet to see them hit my Mileage Plus account. Hertz points usually post next day.

FAQs in the Wiki state to allow 6-8 weeks. They also state bonus mileage should post 5-10 business days after one's base 500 Hertz miles. In other words, wait, but hold on to your records just in case!

My first rental as a PC at LAX, I was assigned a Toyota Corolla. Clearly no upgrade and I'm surprised that's considered midsize. Plus the car was far from the bus drop off.

As usual, I went with Gold Choice and got a Chrysler 200 with 1550 miles on it.

Did you dispute with the Gold Desk at the airport, or were you too much in a hurry? You could have at least gotten something documented in the records to dispute later

When I was PC about three years ago, I never had a problem. And, in those days I would reserve a FullSize and ALWAYS be upgraded to a Premium. I mean always! But my reservations were usually made a week in advance, so perhaps that helped.

Hertz's current stratification of rental car classes make it simple for them to give you an "upgrade" which is worthless. Years ago, sure, mid to full size, for example, was great, or economy to mid- or intermediate. Now, it's from one type of mid- to another "better" one (I forget the rental class letters, FWIW). And IIRC, you can no longer get Premium from Full, though I typically avoid renting Full.

As for being parked far away, what is complaining going to do? I'm going to walk all the way back to the gold desk when they've parked me at the opposite corner of the lot? Not likely. (And FWIW, in my past several years of being PC, it has been a rare rental indeed that was located near the terminal or bus stop, or for that matter in the spaces marked for PC and Prestige, etc.)

I booked a midsize. I didn't bother to dispute it since the car I got (considered fullsize) was steps away from the bus. It was just easier.

This reservation was made a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure my PC would have been reflected, but when I checked out, the agent thanked me for being PC.

Looks like yesterday was the day. I got mine at 7:34pm ET. Too bad Hertz isn't one of our corporate preferred rental agencies.
