Refundability of upgrade fee if travel plans changed?

I purchased an EWR-PDX-EWR flight for later in the month, and took the pop-up upgrade at point of ticketing. I no longer am going to take the flight. I know the original ticket purchase basically just becomes a credit less the change fee. What's the situation with the upgrade charge ?.

Many thanks in advance

Google for "United Premium Cabin Upgrade". It's the first link.

https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/pro...miumCabin.aspx

Upgrades are generally nonrefundable, but if a flight is canceled, your itinerary is changed to a different flight, or the flight is oversold and we cannot accommodate you in a premium cabin on a later flight, United will refund the purchase price of the unused upgrade. For ticket changes or exchanges, the full value of the upgrade may be refundable.
Request the refund. Worst case, it's rejected.

You get a credit, and have to pay a change fee in new money.

Refund of upgrade charge when changing flight?

Please point me to proper thread:

I paid an online fee to secure an upgrade to an A fare.

Subsequently, I had to change my plans. I've paid the change fee and am in Y on my new flight. Does the upgrade fee get returned? (When making the change, inky the original fare was reflected).

Yes, voluntary. Upgrade had been to A class.

It sounds like you exchanged an A fare for a Y fare. If so, the money applied for the upfare was applied to the new ticket.

One would think that....

But the value of my old ticket when I exchanged only reflected the original value before I upfared to A.

Update

It was not (in this case) an automatic refund. I called and spoke with a very helpful agent who needed help from her support desk. But th refund is now in process.

Was this a pop-up upgrade, or paid upgrade after the reservation was ticketed?

Either way, glad to hear the issue was resolved.

Refund on Cancelled 1st Class Upgrade

I recently booked a flight & a week later had to move the trip back a day. Originally I purchased a $119 upgrade to 1st on the outbound segment but when I moved trip back a day the new flight didn't have that option so I sat in coach.

I have yet to receive a refund on cancelled 1st Class upgrade. Surely I am entitled to one, right? Still had to pay a $200 change fee too.

The old fare, including upgrade, was applied to the new fare. (At least if this was done right)

It wasn't unfortunately. I will submit an online refund request.

Wow, United rejected my refund request. I should at least be able to use these funds toward another flight. Not sure how though.

United often denies valid refund requests.

At this point, your goal should be to expend as many of UA's resources as you can until they provide the desired outcome.

I would suggest doing all of these and seeing which one(s) stick:

1. Resubmit the refund request; and
2. Dispute the upgrade charge with your credit card; and
3. Dispute $119 of the change fee with your credit card; and
4. Write to CS; and
5. Submit a DOT complaint
