United: Pioneering the west-bound domestic red-eye.
EDIT TO ADD: I think this is an awesome idea and can be super convenient for the right traveler. I just think it would be uncomfortable as hell. Not something I would jump at unless schedule dictates. Good to have the option, though.

You'll arrive on-time at 2:54am. Then the captain says:
Our first gate agents arrive for work at 4:30am, so we'll have to wait until then for the jetway to be moved and opened...

I'm all for odd flights that maximize my time, I take the 5:30p SFO-EWR quite a bit, but with slimline seats and such extreme arrival/departure hours, this one is just too much.
Hats off to anyone that can do this and still be productive the next day.

Hmmmmmmmm. Not sure how I feel about these.
I never sleep on red-eyes and just get to work when I arrive on the East Coast...so why not do the same when I get home to California. I can take the first SFO-SAN and be in the office early.

This is effectively the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which is the busiest travel day of the year. People will be all over this flight as it will allow them more time at Mom & Dad's house before heading back to SFO.

Wow is anything even kept open that late at ORD? All the beatdown clubs close at 10pm.
I've been on a SFO-BOS flight that arrived around 1:45am but 3am is crazy early hah...or crazy late

Very interesting concept.
Here is the thread about the UX red-eyes (ONT-IAH, etc.):

I miss the 1am red-eye on UA that was on a mainline from places like ONT.
