OP: It seems on most days a PDX-SFO-SEA connection flights gets into SEA around 10h00 a.m. - allowing enough time to get on the NH 788 SEA-NRT, which leaves around noon or later, depending on time of the year.

You're suggesting a 5-6 hour option (when all goes to plan) vs a 50 minute flight? Sorry, but unless you've got a heap of time (or a family) the trade off suggests biting the bullet and flying with PG/TG.
