I hope it turns out to be a PS bird, but my gut instinct is that it's a "Ghost in the Machine". I'm on that OGG-LAX flight on Aug 27.
It's currently showing:
Available Cabins: F1, A1, JN1, C0, D0, Z0, ZN0, P0, PN0, R0, RN0, IN0, I0, Y0, YN0, B0, M0, E0, U0, H0, HN0, Q0, V0, W0, S0, T0, L0, K0, G0, N0, XN0, X0
and last time I checked seatmap there were lots of seats in the Y cabin.
During the P.S. transition, there was some buggy code going on vis-a-vis seatmaps. On one very memorable occasion, I showed up at LAX for the red-eye to JFK, and the overhead monitor was showing a plain 752. Happily, when I boarded, it was a P.S. bird.

I couldn't find any either. Understandable that one could be used out of LAX or SFO to Hawaii under extenuating circumstances, but for one to find its way to Denver somehow to be used on the Maui route is a bit far-fetched. I don't think we'll get the flight dates.

There aren't p.s. planes sitting around in Denver to be used as a substitute. They normally fly exclusively between LAX/SFO and JFK. One was used out of LAX to LIH a couple of times, but I doubt your friend was on one out of Denver.

Not trying to be argumentative (and I have no idea what the aircraft was on the DEN flight), but I flew a P.S. plane from PHL-ORD several years ago so oddball substitutions do happen.

Definitely a one-off. That a/c's series of flights looks like it was used because it replaced a non-p.s. 752 that was out of service for a while. It definitely is not a regularly-scheduled a/c out of DEN. I bet when you friend bought the ticket, it was a regular 752 and by sheer luck he got the p.s.

My family and I flew DEN-KOA-DEN a few weeks ago, and no such luck; just regular 24 seat FC 757.

Well.... 2.5 weeks since last post in this thread. Flights are still showing the PS seat map, and the F only booking class seems to have resolved. The flight we are booked on started showing Y seats available and went F7 R1 couple days ago. Yesterday it went F7 R3, and I decided to jump on those three upgrades. Now F6 R0, which seems a bit odd.
All the flights with the PS bird are #391 as best I can tell. Maybe they are taking a regular 757-200 out for maintenance, and subbing in a spare PS bird? One can hope...

A bunch of the p.s. birds are ETOPS-rated as they were formerly part of the subfleet of 757s used by UA for Hawaii service. If a route is presently sUA, and for various operational reasons, can't be swapped to the sCO side and also requires an ETOPS airplane, then 7 of the 16 ETOPS sUA 757s also sport the p.s. config.
It's not hard to see how such a swap could (and does) periodically happen.

Plenty of unassigned seats in lie-flat F for UA635 on 8/23 (9 out of 28 unassigned, which I know doesn't mean they're not sold).
But since you can't actually book the flight right now, does that suggest that the flight is indeed sold-out?
