16 JULY '14 - UA942 returns to EWR?

Unless I'm reading this wrong on Flight Aware it looks like UA942 EWR-LHR has done a turnaround over western Mass. and is heading back to EWR... July 16 2215 EDT. N648UA.

Wonder what's up?

Flight Aware text still shows it flight-planned to LHR, but UA's flight status shows it landing back at EWR at 22:46 EDT

Weather was really bad on the East Coast this morning, although I don't know specifically for that plane. I also noticed that UA 477 from BOS-SFO got diverted to OMA to refuel.

Flight status on the United app says it's a maintenance delay.

I'm on the flight. About 40 minutes out, the captain announced that we are returning to EWR. The rear fire suppression system and the back up were both non functional. He said it was supposedly fixed before we boarded. They have a replacement aircraft due to take off at midnight.

Everyone was calm

That's gotta be pretty expensive.

At some point maintenance costs will be compared to operating costs and they will realize its way cheaper to do maintenance.

Glad no one was hurt and the captain made a great decision to not fly without fire suppression.

Simplified, a sprinkler system in the rear cargo pit.

Cargo fire suppression system. Got it, never heard it referred to as the "rear system."
