New Routes: IAH-SCL, IAH-PUJ, and ORD-BZE

Hi everyone,

Yes as you may have heard, we alerted employees today that, pending government approval, we intend to launch service between Houston and Santiago, Chile, along with two other new routes. You’ll see the specific flight schedules during the weekend and our formal announcement on Monday. Some good news for a Friday!

Chile would be great. It's quite difficult to get to SCL on *A right now — there's Copa via PTY and Air Canada via YYZ and not a whole lot else.

Ditto. I've often been in a domestic F seat on Copa wishing CO (and now UA) would fly there. It got mining, agriculture, tourism, and is just a short hop over to Mendoza. Never understood why it's taken so long for CO/UA to do this. Maybe this is where a FCO plane will spend the (northern hemisphere) winter.

Not sure about the other 2, but the ORD BZE is like 1x/wk seasonaly. Not a huge add to the network. Long time to be on a 737.

That's pretty normal for South America. GIG/GRU/EZE have long sits as well.

Any reason why not doing an extension instead. Say IAH-SCL-EZE?

Yeah sitting for a long time.

Years ago, this flight was operated from ORD-SCL, by pmUA.

One wonders if they will keep this route ( long term) given the current state of UNITED.

I can count the number of false starts

IAD-DXB-DOH ( DXB-DOH) gone
IAD-ACC-LOS (all gone) LOS replaced with IAH-LOS
IAD-EZE gone
IAD-DME gone
EWR-IST gone
EWR-EZE gone
NRT-BKK (smisek'd)
IAD-GRU-GIG (GRU-GIG gone), so now one has to trek to Houston to go to GIG from the east coast

I can see Belize and Punta Cana staying, presumably operated by 737-900ER or the like.

Copy and past of what was sent to me from someone I know at United

We will announce on Monday plans to launch nonstop Boeing 767-300 service to SCL (Santiago, Chile) from IAH beginning Dec. 7, 2014, subject to government approval. We also will launch service between IAH and PUJ (Punta Cana, Dominican Republic) and between ORD and BZE (Belize City, Belize) on Dec. 20, 2014.

Flight 847 will depart IAH daily at 9:05 p.m. and arrive at SCL at 9:40 a.m. the next day. Return Flight 846 will depart SCL daily at 10:45 p.m. and arrive at IAH at 5:40 a.m. the following day. This service expands our already substantial presence in Latin America. We timed the flights to provide convenient connections beyond IAH to 111 airports across the U.S. and more than 60 international destinations.

IAH-PUJ will operate year-round on Saturdays; we’ll also offer seasonal service on Sundays in the winter and spring during periods when we expect higher demand
ORD-BZE, subject to government approval, will offer seasonal Saturday service through May 2, 2015
This winter, we also plan to expand our seasonal, nonstop IAH-AUA (Aruba) service. We currently offer Saturday IAH-AUA flights that are scheduled to continue through Aug. 16, 2014. On Dec. 20, we will resume Saturday service that will continue through early May 2015 and will begin seasonal winter and spring service on Sundays.

Does this timing save having an extra crew in EZE/SCL/etc.?

One wonders if the recent visa waiver has anything to do with this. Visa / reciprocity fee non needed for Chile, for US Citizens at least.

From a corporate communication standpoint, well executed . This is meant to deflect the recent spat of bad news with a positive, and is UA's answer to AA's expansion in Asia, ( HKG) route started a few days ago.

However, the fundamentals of what UNITED is today, remain.
