Need to cancel non-refundable ticket. SOL?
I booked a one-way flight on UA for my wife on Sunday. The total cost was $378. She won't be taking the flight.
Is there any way to get any of the value of that flight in a credit or a change? Are there any tricks on how to maintain the best value for the flight? It seems that when changing the flight the taxes don't count towards my credit, yet they appear to charge taxes on the new flight as well, is that correct?
Thanks.

When you cancel the ticket you will have the value available for 1 year from original ticketing. You will have to pay a change fee with new money. Change fee amount will depend on what your original ticket fare rules say but count on at least $200.

Given the sorry state of UA's customer-facing IT system, I'd be inclined to call and inquire as to why the online cancellation you completed within the 24hr penalty-free cancellation period doesn't seem to have worked, and when you might be expecting to see your refund.
If you find you need to be a little more persuasive, I would quietly invoke the words "Dee Oh Tee" until I received a satisfactory resolution to UA's IT glitch.
(You "moral police" types can save it; I'm not interested. If UA ever demonstrated that it gave one crap about me or tried to do what was right when THEY made a mistake, I might feel differently. But it hasn't, so I don't.)

Since when is the time period from Sunday to Wednesday 24 hours? OP is out of luck.
I don't get your point either. UA can see when the ticket was purchased.

He/she is telling OP to call UA and lie (as UA has never done to us about the "weather" etc) that they had cancelled the ticket within 24 hours online (which, if it failed, UA would have a record no different than if it wasn't done) but noticed that the reservation was still there and wanted a timeframe for when they might see the a refund.

When is the flight? If its in a few months time, there is always the chance of a schedule change and you should be able to cancel if its more than an hour or so different. There is also always the small chance of weather waivers, so don't hurry to cancel.

I believe the actual process is to cancel, then you pay another $200 (assuming a domestic trip) when you want to use the ticket. Up to one year, of course, then the ticket is worthless.
