What does United First/Meals for Purchase mean?

I'm contemplating a domestic upgrade (DCA-SFO) and the United website says "United First/Meals for Purchase"

Now its been a loooong time since I was in domestic business, so I'm not sure if that means I have to buy my meals, like in Economy or if that refers to the ability to buy Economy meals, but I would get free biz class meals regardless.

No, I'm not upgrading for the food, that would be foolish, but I'd love to know if United has truly gotten that cheap in domestic business. I usually fly international, where all food is free still.

Thanks in advance.

PS: This old post mentions this in a pre-merger context, but its closed to new questions.

Just curious, what time is the flight?

Its almost 100% a display error. F on a transcon will generally get a meal unless departing after 8:00pm, when it should be a snack plate. I've seen meals display incorrectly a number of times.

You'll get an included meal although you may want to buy one of the economy meals ("BOB"), which are often better than the First meals.

I'm on the 8:15am DCA-SFO flight (only 1 per day).

Are F meals that bad these days?

You'll get the dreaded (by most) UA breakfast.

Some people think the food is not that bad. I am not one of them.

it means you're going to wish you purchased your food beforehand.

i for one don't think the cereal is that bad of a breakfast option, however i'm a light eater in the morning and i always have a granola bar for backup if i get hungry further into the flight.

For me, it would mean "have breakfast before you board."

Standard UA TCON fare. Breakfast with the snack basket (what UA calls "refreshments") passed around about an hour out of SFO.

The food is not that bad...

Except the breakfast. The breakfast is terrible. Eat before the flight.

Disagree - I'd much rather have a real Egg McMuffin than the All Jeff'd Up version!

I don't like that "Italian cold plate" they've been offering up a lot recently.
Some of the meals have been okay, but others really unappetizing. I don't mind the shrimp salad, for one.
I haven't thought to ask about buying a sandwich when I've been in 1st. I would probably do that on occasion. I find the Buffalo wrap okay even if it is $9.

I find the Asian Chicken Noodle salad quite good... Ridiculous I would have to pay for a Y meal if I did not like what was being served in F.

I actually don't mind the cereal breakfast. Cereal, yogurt, fruit -- just fine with me. I think I had read they were switching to a greek yogurt instead which would be even better.
