EWR AirTrain to be Suspended for 75 Days Starting May 1 (Now Open as of 3 July 2014)

We want to make sure you're aware that Newark Airport's AirTrain service will be shut down from May 1 through July 15 for much-needed repairs.

During this closure, complimentary shuttle buses supplied by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will serve as an alternate mode of transportation between the airport and lots P2 and P3 (daily parking and rental car areas), as well as the P4 garage (including valet and hotel courtesy vans). Bus service will also be available between the airport and Newark Penn Station for customers taking rail service to and from Manhattan and other areas.

Please keep this in mind when planning your travel, and allow extra time to get to and from the airport.
For passengers on flights arriving at Terminal C (gates 70 and higher): The bus station is located between terminals B and C, and is accessible via the mid-level check-in floor. If you have no checked baggage, do not go to the baggage level. After exiting security, simply follow the orange signs.

[Someone please confirm if hotel shuttles are still at P4 during the construction.]

Has anyone tried to get UA to change their flight from ZFV to PHL?

I'll be writing to the UA Insider team asking to do just that as soon as I take the time to figure out what alternative itinerary makes the most sense.

One more thing -- you can't go airside from B-3 to anywhere else as the bus only drops off there. It does nt pick up.

And that makes perfect sense, because all *A arrivals at B3 are international, so no pax would be getting off the airplane and connecting to another terminal without going through immigration and customs.

Time to book flights into LGA instead! I used the airtrain for the first time last weekend and couldn't help but think who on earth designed this thing with those tiny little cars with one bench? They couldn't have the same type of monorail as pretty much every airport?

I was thinking of doing something similar. I've spoken to three phone agents, all of whom have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.

It looks like UA has now pulled all the inventory that has the Amtrak codeshare for these dates.

UPDATE: Just called into UA. The train segments are now showing up "red" on their side – canceled segments. It does not display that on my end. Anyways, the very accommodating agent switched me to leave out of PHL 1-2-3.

Likewise. Was traveling on a miles ticket and they rebooked me to the flight combination I wanted even though was showing no availability. Thanks Amtrak

Yow -- you're right. It sure is a crummy time to be a United person in Philly -- first our backup airline jumped ship from the alliance, and now they've taken away our second (more like main?) hub for the summer.

I sometimes book from EWR, sometimes from JFK. I dodged a bullet here, as my flights in this period are all booked through JFK.

This construction would have taken away my margin of error for getting to these flights; I haven't missed a United flight in a million miles, and I don't want to start now. I would have requested that United rebook me from JFK; in my past experience they allow this kind of request. I wonder how many requests like this they'll field? And will this impact EWR upgrade rates?

I've experienced nearly all of the "alternatives" described on this thread, most recently forced to a $25, half hour taxi from Newark downtown station. On an earlier bus replacing the monorail, no one said a word when we were stuck at the locked gate till I announced this was a psych experiment. "Emergency Exits" is just a label, and this route could be opened; just staff the gate to keep out stray traffic. I suspect the real reason is that the area around the station will be tied up with construction traffic.

Looks like the website will no longer allow booking ZFV itineraries during the shutdown.

Hey...great excuse on which UA Management can blame 2Q and 3Q results. Then weather comes back for 4Q and 1Q15. God wants Simsek in charge

It seems to me that the landside of EWR should be completely avoided during this period if one has a choice? This including taking a VDB at EWR.

Any plans for a waiver? EWR is (was) easy to get into Manhattan, but I want no part of it while this construction is taking place. I'd rather fly to JFK.

EWR and JFK are NYC co-terminals so I don't see why they wouldn't let you do this. Worth a try
