EWR AirTrain to be Suspended for 75 Days Starting May 1 (Now Open as of 3 July 2014)

We want to make sure you're aware that Newark Airport's AirTrain service will be shut down from May 1 through July 15 for much-needed repairs.

During this closure, complimentary shuttle buses supplied by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will serve as an alternate mode of transportation between the airport and lots P2 and P3 (daily parking and rental car areas), as well as the P4 garage (including valet and hotel courtesy vans). Bus service will also be available between the airport and Newark Penn Station for customers taking rail service to and from Manhattan and other areas.

Please keep this in mind when planning your travel, and allow extra time to get to and from the airport.
For passengers on flights arriving at Terminal C (gates 70 and higher): The bus station is located between terminals B and C, and is accessible via the mid-level check-in floor. If you have no checked baggage, do not go to the baggage level. After exiting security, simply follow the orange signs.

[Someone please confirm if hotel shuttles are still at P4 during the construction.]

Why wouldn't PANYNJ have wanted PATH running to EWR?
Because PATH loses money, and EWR makes money for the PANYNJ. Back in the day, the idea of bringing any form of rail to an airport was seen to cut down on parking revenues, and because the PANYNJ owned PATH, running more trains would mean losing more money.

By the way, my old transportprof was being ironic when he said "Monorails are the transportation mode of the future, and they always will be". He meant that they will always be a future option because they can never work well as a mode of mass transportation in the present. Parking lot shuttles and Disney rides don't count as mass transportation. EWR is still in search of a mass transportation link that actually works!

It's an easy walk to Avis/Hertz/National/Enterprise from Terminal A. I always walk it, even in the unlikely event that the Airtrain is running.

The road is some 30 feet below the AirTrain station level. Surely it can be accessed by service stairs, which may or may not be usable by hoards of passengers with luggage. What kind of civilian access is there to get to the access road? No escalator, we know that. Elevators? Stairs? Fireman's pole?

I often rent at EWR for more favorable rates and better selection of cars, even if I'm not flying. I have found that it is often just as fast, and sometimes faster, to walk to P4 and catch the AirTrain there than take the AirTrain from P3 and wait for it to inch all the way around the terminal areas to P4 and on to the RAILink station. The trip from P3 to the RAILink can be as long as 20 minutes.

Ugh, this is horrible news for those of us with summer business class trips to Europe from EWR. I hate the AirTrain too, but it beats peak hour traffic at certain times.

This is totally off memory, but when the AirTrain wasn't working and we were forced onto the bus from EWR NJTransit stop, I recall there being a staircase and one elevator. The elevator was full with a large queue, so I opted for the stairs.

Not to worry. I hear the Governor's office is hard at work on a EWR traffic management program.

That's good to know. The one time I'm booked into EWR thus far, I'll be landing from MXP, and traveling with a boatload of luggage. So I might wind up taking the shuttle bus, if we clear customs in Terminal C.

Same here. I even walk to Term C often. About a 15 minute walk if you cut through the airport by walking near the Marriott and through the parking lot...

I'm hoping that one can walk between terminals airside, in the event of a connection across terminals? Can someone verify? Thanks!

No, but there's a shuttle bus. Though you best have a board pass, lest the bus dragons get you with their inexplicable bus exclusivity enforcement.

Good memory, that is correct. I just did this same thing a few weeks ago. I guess they figured they would rarely need an elevator since there is no outside access.

Olympic Trails has very convenient bus service from EWR to Manhattan. Stops are Port Authority Bus terminal 41st and 8th Ave, Bryant Park 42st and 5th, and Grand central Station 42nd and 5th avenue. Fare is $16.00 one way and $28.00 round trip. I have taken this bus several times, runs at times every 15 minute's.

Are you sure about that? i can't think of whats stopping you from doing it. Im almost certain you can walk from A to B, there is just a small parking lot separating them. Not sure I ever looked between B and C.

Blocking all the runways would certainly cut down on the number of pesky passengers trying to get to the airport.
