EWR AirTrain to be Suspended for 75 Days Starting May 1 (Now Open as of 3 July 2014)

We want to make sure you're aware that Newark Airport's AirTrain service will be shut down from May 1 through July 15 for much-needed repairs.

During this closure, complimentary shuttle buses supplied by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will serve as an alternate mode of transportation between the airport and lots P2 and P3 (daily parking and rental car areas), as well as the P4 garage (including valet and hotel courtesy vans). Bus service will also be available between the airport and Newark Penn Station for customers taking rail service to and from Manhattan and other areas.

Please keep this in mind when planning your travel, and allow extra time to get to and from the airport.
For passengers on flights arriving at Terminal C (gates 70 and higher): The bus station is located between terminals B and C, and is accessible via the mid-level check-in floor. If you have no checked baggage, do not go to the baggage level. After exiting security, simply follow the orange signs.

[Someone please confirm if hotel shuttles are still at P4 during the construction.]

Alright for you. I'm already committed to several itins that require the hated EWR-JFK terminal transfer during the disruption period. I would not have planned these if I had any idea of what's about to happen.

As someone said, perhaps that means many pax will be disrupted, to the degree that UA may have to provide better accommodations than their normally low irop standard....

PANYNJ operates the EWR Airtrain but not the buses from Newark Penn Station to EWR? Are the involved parties going to increase/improve bus service from Newark Penn to the airport?

If road traffic wasn't a mess at the hours I go to/from EWR, I would do the private buses/shuttles that go between NYC and EWR more often -- but that's not a good solution from lower Manhattan.

I am going to try and do this for two ZFV runs I have booked for June. Hopefully UA will be accommodating.

PANYNJ doesn't operate any bus services off airport property - those are all handled by NJTransit or private carriers. I think in the past they've used airport busses to run the temporary shuttles between P4 and Raillink, but that's about it.

I'd like to raise a point that seems to be getting overlooked here. Several pages ago it was asserted that EWR's terminal design was an intentional move to prevent an extension of PATH to EWR. Conspiracy theories aside, here's what doesn't make sense to me:

        - PANYNJ runs EWR
        - PANYNJ runs PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson - it's right there in the name!)

Why wouldn't PANYNJ have wanted PATH running to EWR?

Thanks for the clarification. That's a 50% improvement (I could have said only half as bad as I feared)

Yikes. Booked into EWR and out (to BOM) in early June. Usually, love EWR for the ease of getting there from the city and that I don't have to worry about whether there will be traffic, etc.

Will be fun trying to get to EWR for the BOM flight which leaves at ~8, right in the middle of rush hour.

How much time is the connection and when? Depending on the answers to those questions and absent (i) the rapid invention of teleportation or (b) access to a helicopter, you could have some issues.

Doesn't this belong in the NYC thread? I get that EWR is a major UA hub, but lack of AirTrain combined with runway issues and Pulaski skyway seems to concern NYC people more than just UA flyers. Besides, people flying UA simply connecting in UA aren't really suffering from lack of AirTrain

It would probably get 1/100th of the exposure in the NYC forum vs. here in the UAL forum, and disproportionately impacts United travelers who not only use the system for access to the airport, but for transfers between flights (e.g. international arrivals at B>C, UA>AC, ZFV, etc.).

The city forums are places for threads to go to make sure the people who care most about them well never see them.

Has anyone called and tried to get to PHL instead of ZFV due to the Air Train issue? Curious to know what you had learned. I have a trip early May. Thanks and Safe Travels..

I was thinking of just writing to the UA Insider team, since phone agents probably won't understand or know about the issue.

        +1

Please keep up posted on what you find out, I have a ZFV trip that would be seriously impacted by this as well

        received today
        Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your upcoming reservations at Newark Liberty airport (EWR).

As a valued customer, we would like to advise you that the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey plans to shut down Newark Airport’s Air Train Service for improvements.

This shut down will impact all car rental companies during your reservation period.

During this shut down the Port Authority will provide a free bus service to and from the car rental facility and airport terminals. There will also be additional staff on hand to help guide you to your destination.

This change in arrangements may cause a delay in your commute time between your arrival/departure terminal and the car rental facility. Please allow for a delay of up to one hour for traffic and construction.

Although this disruption to normal services is outside of our control, please be assured that our team will do everything we can to ensure your smooth transition to and from your car rental.

We look forward to serving your needs.

        AVIS BUDGET GROUP
