Runway construction at EWR and Impact to UA's Operations [20 Sept - 30 Sept 2014]
It seems construction on one of the EWR runways kicked off last Friday. Unfortunately, I've had to use EWR for UAX flight connections.
I've already had to spend one night in EWR and it seems not much will change.
How is UAX or even UA going to make EWR during runway construction? I now have no choice but to book away from UA because UAX reliability at EWR went for poor to terrible.

4L/22R is going to be closed through June 1, and then operating at reduced capacity through June 15. It will be fully operational through the peak summer months and then closed one final time from September 20 through 30.
When the project is complete, there will be new high-speed exits to get airplanes off the runway faster, new LED lighting and the entire length will be resurfaced. Ultimately this should allow the airport to handle arriving traffic more efficiently.
EWR can function well when visual meteorological conditions prevail as departing traffic will use 4R/22L and arrivals can be handled on 11/29. However, because 29 does not have an ILS/DME, approaches under instrument conditions must be handled on 4R/22L, making EWR effectively a single-runway airport.

another disguised blessing of EWR round trips being priced beyond my frugal spending limits. PHL and JFK are twice as far from where i want to end up, but half the price and 20x less the misery.

I think this issue deserves a higher profile in the UA forum. Sounds like it will have significant impacts on airline operations for a long time to come, although if I read the SFO forum thread right the main closure doesn't begin until May.

One of the Skywest staff at our little airport has told us to brace ourselves for a very bad summer. As if the usual summer (SFO fog) isn't bad enough.
