United codeshare with LAN?
I'm booking a flight to CTG, and united.com is showing flights from BOG - CTG on LAN, which is surprising because LAN is oneworld and United-LAN do not have a codeshare agreement, AFAIK. Or has that changed?

No, you won't earn points in MileagePlus for the flight. UA can and will sell flights on non-MP partners. They have for many years.

UA seems pretty well-tied with the rest of the airlines (oneworld) and offers codeshares where either they or *A doesn't have much coverage. You wont get any PQM/S/D; but you have the option of claiming the miles on a oneworld carrier.

That is not a codeshare. UA is just willing to sell you the connection on LAN.
This is a big change for UA to offer that route on .com, btw. In the past it did not recognize CTG as a revenue destination. I'm surprised they're not offering more options with *A partner AV. AV has about three times as many daily flights on that route as LAN. Note that if you route on LAN rather than AV, you will not get any *A benefits, including lounge access in BOG or CTG (and there's a nice new AV lounge at CTG). |
Thanks for the clarifications.
I fly a lot to Colombia and when I buy tickets on united.com, only Copa and AV show up. This is the first time I see LAN. I guess it's a new move. |

Yes, I saw it yesterday for an early morning connection BOG-MDE that previously had only been shown with CM or AV. What really concerned me is that no CM or AV options were shown. I have no problem with LAN, but to me, this is yet another reason to try to avoid UA to Colombia if I can. Losing 500 RDM/PQM and lounge access on top of the GPU requirement for upgrade really makes it undesirable. In fact, I'm looking at my trip for the first week of May right now, and I just crossed the return DCA-IAH-BOG-MDE off my list even though it would get me home 5 to 8 hours sooner.
Another funny thing I saw: the most direct flight in Y is around $1100 r/t in June. Doing a dumb rerouting from IAH to EWR and then to BOG/PTY r/t is $1400 and it's all in J. I'm tempted to do this. |
