Well, having IFE on personal devices sounds good to me: https://hub.united.com/en-us/news/co...al-device.aspx

Seems similar to a Qantas flight I was on last year (SYD-PER) but with Qantas they had iPads available for passengers to use - at least in the front cabin. Unfortunately... they had too much demand and the system crashed.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out.

Watch inflight movies and TV on your personal device

https://hub.united.com/en-us/news/co...al-device.aspx

"Starting this April, we’re rolling out our new personal device entertainment system onboard select aircraft. With this new service, sponsored by the MileagePlus® Explorer Card, you can choose from over 150 movies and nearly 200 TV shows and watch them free of charge on your personal device.

Most planes will be equipped with the new system very soon, and we’ll have it installed on most domestic aircraft by the end of 2014. We’ll begin on Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and select 777-200 aircraft, followed by additional fleets. In the end, all United-operated flights will have some form of entertainment..."

This could be good (especially on a TATL 747 in Economy) but only if power plugs are also available at all seats. Even fully charged, my Personal Device will not last for the whole flight!

I'm on yet another dark A320, and they've already announced the wifi isn't working. So I'm less than confident they can execute this when they can't even get the basics right.

Good in theory. However, most UA planes I have been on lately still do not have power outlets, even in First, and even cross-country. (Not to mention no A/V). And since it is a Wifi system, its likely to be glitchy since UA's wifi is notoriously unreliable.

Caveat with the usual lack of power points, wi-fi doesn't even work half the time, etc. kind of comments, but I'm glad this is finally coming to some planes in the near future. More and more of my flying out of SFO seems to be on dark A319s and A320s (tonight and Friday for example)........

But, does this part of the announcement fill anyone else with complete and utter dread?!:

From United's website:

If you’re traveling on a flight with personal device entertainment, be sure to bring your fully-charged laptop, smartphone or tablet, and your headphones. Power outlets and Wi-Fi Internet service are not currently available on aircraft with personal device entertainment, but these features will be added soon.

It's still free. The only people that this is a downgrade for are (a) people who don't have a laptop, phone or tablet they can use to watch the new content, or (b) people who prefer watching reruns of TV shows on a mark I LCD screen that is unwatchable from most viewing angles.

Assuming it works - and that's a big assumption - I see this as a huge improvement for these aircraft. But of course that type of logic doesn't necessarily apply here

Had this on my SFO-HNL-SFO turn on the 777. UA sent an email a couple days before announcing streaming entertainment would be available and to make sure my devices were fully charged.

Overall works pretty well but the selection of movies is not on par with the AVOD on the intl planes. But definitely better than the one movie they used to show on this flight. So overall it is an improvement.

Why in the world do they roll these things out on Airbus then 747s (similar to wifi)? Almost all the domestic routes are 737s.

With wifi it's such a joke. They show the updates by aircraft making it seem like they are close across the board (except 737s). In reality, only 20% (sadly I did the math) of the fleet are currently updated with wifi.

Ok -- my rant is done for the day.
