It's out already.

New non-stop service between LAX and MEL (Melbourne, Australia), using a Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The service will soon be loaded into our selling inventory. The six-times-weekly service will begin Oct. 26, 2014, subject to government approval. With the launch of this new route, we will end service between MEL and SYD

This is extremely disappointing for those of us who prefer SFO to LAX. I hate transferring through LAX, particularly on arrival.

Odd to choose the competitive LAX-MEL instead of the non-competitive SFO-MEL.

Indeed, those of us who are terminating in SFO will surely prefer to change in SYD or AKL rather than LAX, whether that involves UA or not. I guess one question is whether LAX pax would rather connect in SFO than fly nonstop. Given my experience re-entering the US in LAX, it would be close.

Are you talking about United T7 immigration or the Bradley Terminal?

Even as to the Bradley Terminal, it was just completely remodeled.

Leave it to FT to complain about something positive.

This should vastly improve the reliability of the SYD-LAX flight. More premium and Econ seats to SYD and MEL. There's virtually no downside.

If anyone is curious this flight will be flown with an sCO LAI (Los Angeles International) FA based crew.

I thought these were the sUA orders, if my memory is correct, how are they being crewed with sCO, will that not further inflame the already bad relations between the sUA and sCO side?

How many layouts does UA have for the 787?

What a boring route. There are already plenty of seats going from US --> Australia (not necessarily on UA, however). What happened to the IAH --> AKL that was announced when the 787 was first proposed?

Those of us who have to come all the way to the east coast after a trip down under have one option: QF to Dallas. All the other options via LAX and SFO yield long layovers and multi-stops.

Thumbs Down UA.

How about those folks who want to fly SFO-SYD-MEL with a stop-over in SYD?
