I suspect Lufthansa only did this because people United and other Star Alliance members are not booking German Wings.

JONEZY00 hit it on the head. Why would I want to fly a LH run airline that provides me no Star Alliance benefits? Might as well fly Easyjet, Vueling, or any other carrier.

German Wings = worse than TED

Any German city that isn't Frankfurt or Munich will get German Wings flights. So for example Germany's most populous city Berlin ... excellent plan.

Hmm. We're flying on a LH mainline HAM-LHR today. Is that going away?

Wow, I fly to Germany a few times a year but was unaware of this. No lounge access? Under what conditions? Is this true even if you're on a business class ticket?

Do you still get access if you have a United Club membership?

Why would Lufthansa do this anyway - don't they get money from United for any of their *G flyers?

This would only affect me when i fly like PRG-DUS, as I guess it won't include flights into their hubs, but still.

Business Class still gets you lounge access. United Club still gets you lounge access.

Lufthansa probably wants their lounges less crowded and more exclusive.

...or like UA not allowing UA *G into their lounges...

Not quite the same: UA allows other *A carriers (with the exception of US--something which is reciprocal) into their lounges.

Definitely, though, if UA said, "Ooh, flying Ted [when it existed] or United Express doesn't allow you to use the lounge, even though you're *G," the situation would be parallel. I wonder if UA tried that stunt if LH would back off on the remaining GermanWings restrictions?

But does it still get you Senator lounge access? Like if I'm going from DUS-PRG, can I access the Senator lounge in DUS like I always have, by virtue of "departing on a Star Alliance carrier as *G"?

No, because Germanwings is *not* Star Alliance. I'm a SEN, now saying goodbye to M&M and moving to MileagePlus (yeah, yeah, I know, but I have my SEN status until 2017, there's no way I can renew it after the last round of earning enhancements, so I'm just shopping around to see where the grass is greener).

Anyway, as a Senator, I would have access to only LH-operated lounges and maybe a handful of partner lounges. FTLs have access only for premium fare (eq. business, I think they call it "BEST"). AFAIK, no luggage allowance at all, and FTL can't even use priority boarding or fast lane security...

Sneaky move by LH, and one of the reasons I don't want to stick with them anymore...

Lufthansa has said that all flights that don't go through Munich or Frankfurt will be changed to German Wings.

How the expect to succeed with that strategy in cities like Berlin or in your example Hamburg is beyond anyone's comprehension.

I certainly won't fly German Wings. I'll fly every other LCC.

I'm frankly fed up with all this halfassed Star Alliance stuff. Either do it right or don't at all.
