PCU/UFC? UFC
Where it was offered: online

I've been on the receiving end of differing prices, but not on availability before.
FWIW, a quick check on the mobile app upgrade list indeed shows 1F seat still available, yet UA deems I am not worthy to be offered it.
Similar story for me today. Myself, and then a colleague with no status.

what route: hnd-sfo
original fare bucket: me=p, colleague=p
price offered: me=buy up not available, upgrade for $600+30k miles, colleague=buy up $350 !!!

What the hell is that?

Although I try to be frugal, I'm quite happy to pay for cheap upgrades. Given UA's policies, it seems like the smart to do is to remove my UA FF number and hope for a cheap upgrade offer? I'm a 1K.

I would:
  1. Book the cheapest economy ticket and pick a nice E+ seat (as a 1K).
  2. Periodically remove my UA FF number and look for upgrade offers.
  3. For domestic routes, hope that the CPU clears until I checkin. (as a 1K).
  4. Before checkin, remove my FF for some other airline FF number with no status.
  5. Checkin, preferably at ~24h.
  6. If I don't get an upgrade offer, add back my 1K number and hope for an upgrade.

Are there any flaws with this?

Buy-up to GF for $350? A new low.

SFO-DEN
Fare: K
Status: 1K
Travel date: May 2015
United.com offer: $400

Unclear whether catering cutbacks will mean one or two less olives on my salad/light meal - so I was unable to make a decision whether it was worth spending $400 on an upgrade on a 2.5 hour flight.

Agreed. Just when you think these ridiculous non-status offers couldn't get any worse...

$1659 Y to F on HNL-SFO at OLCI on an old 752. Hilarious, especially after not a single revenue seat was booked and 19/24 UG's cleared before T-24.

I use to think the 757's to Hawai'i were garbage. But now they fly the "first class" 777, 2-3-2 config ghetto bird to the islands, I have had to rethink my definition

Well I am used to getting an offer to buy up to GF from BF and today with 5 seats available they would rather give the seat to a non rev then even bother to offer an ONCI $$$ offer to a 1k.

$400 SFO-DEN? That's not even in the ballpark of "worth it."

Did you fly the domestic 772's in their prior configuration? This is a massive upgrade. It's not even debatable. And I would take the Hawaii 772 over either the sCO 753 or sUA 752 ten times out of ten. Narrowbody domestic F with 38" pitch vs. widebody barcalounger with 55" pitch? Seriously???

$1009 LHR-EWR upsell from Economy to Business at online check in and airport check in. I don't think anyone took up on that offer.

ORD-SXM

what route: ORD-SXM
original fare bucket: S
price offered: $749
PCU/UFC? PCU
Where it was offered/accepted: At booking
Accept it or deny it? Deny

While this is a 5 hr flight in a 737-7, E+ bulkhead seats (with a small child sitting between us) are not much less comfortable than those F seats, and the BOB Tapas Box is often better food than what they serve in F. Certainly not worth almost what we paid for the r/t ticket.

Agree - not on THAT offer. However - by above posts - some kettle might have gotten it for some $ 300 or similar.

Agreed, it's likely UA doesn't want to "play ball" with this soon-to-be PP anyway

The offers I receive seem to be generated by United behind the scenes using random.org with a low value specified as "bad" to high value of "ridiculous."
