United Airlines Fleet Updates [2014 Thread]

The Fleet Status site is:

https://sites.google.com/site/unitedfleetsite/

At the site, you can find information about the interior features, livery, etc., for every plane in United's fleet.

To determine which plane your flight will be on go to mobile.united.com and then click on flight status. Put in the flight number for your flight and just have it use today's date (occasionally it'll say flight not operated on this date in which case just choose one of the other 3 dates it lists). In the address bar you'll see something like this:

mobile.united.com/FlightStatus/FlightDetails?carrierCode=UA&flightNumber=415&flig htDate=9%2F15%2F2015&origin=JFK&destination=SFO

https://mobile.united.com/FlightStatus/FlightDetails?carrierCode=UA&flightNumber=415&flig htDate=9%2F15%2F2015&origin=JFK&destination=SFO

Just change the flight date to match the day of your scheduled flight and then change the origin / destination as necessary. Once you do that look in the details tab under aircraft # and if they have assigned a plane it'll say something like #3506 and the type of plane. Once you know that go to the United Fleet website listed above and cross-reference the four digit number against the "aircraft" column under the appropriate aircraft type.

Keep in mind that things change as they get closer and sometimes either they won't have assigned an aircraft yet or it'll be assigned #0 if it's a few days away and they are anticipating aircraft movement.

You may also check the specific fleet variant of each flight at the United Cargo site under "Schedules & tracking". This data tends to be reliable starting 7 days in advance, but is always subject to change.

Hi Bunky, why is 2515 being brought back into commercial service? The reconfig has not taken place. Now we're back to two of the old domestic 777's in service I think effective tonight or tomorrow. Any insight?

I don't know, but 2514 was scheduled into SFO first and who knows what happened.
My guess is 2514 will come into SFO soon. It may have something to do with 2379, which is now back in HKG for unknown reasons. And 2368 is in SFO.

Who knows if anything was completed on 2515's visit to SFO, but doubt changes were made as any change requires FAA certification.

Is it possible they are getting maintenance done on it? A couple weeks ago ORDHKG cancelled due to a mechanical. It was rescheduled the following day which meant an extra frame ended up in Hong Kong.

So this begs the question I haven't seen elsewhere:

With Airbii having the option to be retrofitted with Sharklets, is UA considering adding them to their birds?

I ask here because we seem to have a lot of posters with inside knowledge in this thread.

No UA will not be retrofitting the Airbus fleet with sharklets.

Thanks for the very quick reply.

This seems odd, as those birds probably have a lot of life in them, and they are very aggressive with Boeing retrofits.

And while the air dams do save fuel, I was under the impression that winglets save quite a bit more.

Could be the 6 foot wingspan increase.
Could be the 14-21 days to retofit these pre-2012 aircraft, including wing strengthening.
Could it be that I can't find a supplier to retrofit except Airbus and they won't start until 1Q15.
While UA's Airbuses have life in them, they are between 12 and 21 years old. About half are younger than the oldest 738 in the fleet.

Also if I remember correctly when Continental financed some of the mid-2000's 737s orders they put some fixed-price purchase options in the lease. These prices were below expected fair market value due to the deal they got from Boeing for ordering during the slump.

If this is true (and again, it's hazy memories and guesses) and the values pan out it's certainly financially attractive for United to buy those and squeeze every last mile out of the 737 fleet, whereas they can walk away from ~40% of the Airbus fleet without any trouble within the next 5 years and sell the other 60% while they still have some value.
