1k mileage run

I ended up 700 miles short of 1 k - decided to fly to Chicago and take an old friend to lunch on yesterday

Suffered the indignation of holiday crush at ewr and ord and was wondering was it really worth it - lunch was fun but I will see her in a few weeks anyway

Once I got home at 9 pm last night I received an email

"Welcome to Global Services for 2014"

I am now wondering did I need to even do that run

Also the message says my benefits do not start until Jan 1 2014 - does that seem strange? Why wouldn't they start right away?

Well, unless you purchased a high fare class (for some reason) on your mileage run, the ticket to Chicago likely had no impact on your Global Services selection for 2014. It wasn't necessary but you got some value out of it.

That's less than $50k of revenue. That's the first time that I've seen that. Are you one of those people who 'has a lot of influence on how a large corporation spends their travel dollars'?

I earned GS this year. Which makes me a little paranoid and wonder... is there another secret Global Services Plus program that's higher up the food chain while maybe GS benefits started to lag? Does it seem like 1k is less special than it was 3-4 years ago?

A I mentioned a few pages back, I received my renewal email. My last year spend was around $42K (minus taxes).

I just spoke with a GS friend of mine who also received the email. Mileage Plus Service Center told him last week that their records show he spent $40,142 in 2013. So far I believe that is the recorded low. (Neither of us works for a Fortune 500 company; we buy on our own dime. We both fly out of small Midwest airports.)

Again, I believe other factors play into it. They take previous years into account, and they are more lenient with renewal amount. It takes more spending to get the initial invitation, but once you're in they keep you unless you really fall far and/or have more than just one year of low spend. Also your location. I believe they award GS to the top _% in each market so it takes less spend to become GS in Madison than SF. This is just educated guessing, though.

It seems like they have lowered their limits by quite a lot. I almost don't want to post this because people may be a bit upset. I received the email last night as well.

(All numbers do not include taxes or fees as I very diligently tracked this at the time of purchase.)

My spend was a bit over 33k. Just under 17k was on full fare tickets. I was at 26.5 cents per mile. This seems to be quite a bit lower than what typical spend required and I think three things may have impacted this.

1) I moved from SFO to DFW. I know some people think that SFO gets special treatment with comments saying that if you have a 415 area code you get automatic entry. I think that moving to a non-hub and continuing to fly United may actually have a higher weight.
2) My spending last year was just shy of $59k with almost 57 of it coming on full fare tickets and 35.5 cpm. They may have averaged the two years or something.
3) I had a significant drop off in flights after July with only 4 paid flights totaling a bit over 3k. This was unrelated to UA, but they may have been thinking that it was and they were trying to woo me back.

Frankly, I am shocked I got it. The only other thing I can think of is that I sent like 5 thank you emails to them this year for above and beyond service and sent 0 complaint emails (although I definitely could have).

I am not complaining and in fact amazingly happy. Hopefully I will actually receive the yellow handle covers for my now common regional jets.

It's all based on a formula which none of us will know. It makes sense to average so a high spend person who has one softer year doesn't get demoted.

Have read many times that the number of GS vs all of UA MP members is a tiny fraction. There will be those who think GS are probably going to increase but with UA's $2b cost cutting plan I bet that's not the case.

This thread makes us lowly 1Ks sad. Haha

In past years, re-qual has been reportedly a lower number than initial qualification for new GS.
