Linking reservations: what does this mean?

I have two separate reservations with less than 24 hours between them. When I list out my reservations, there is an option to link them.

What does this actually mean? Will it work if one reservation is for two people and one is only for myself?

I'd like to link the two so I'll be protected if there's a significant delay on the return of the first leg.

IME it means basically nothing, it groups them together in united.com but doesn't establish a functional link between the PNRs in SHARES that is visible to agents. In other words its mostly for user convenience... Others with more experience may have different feedback.

No such thing; sorry.

I've had very good success with UA accommodating me if their delays cause me to miss connections on separate itineraries they are operating, but that's not because the PNRs are linked; it is just because the agents want to do the right thing.

The linking in the website is purely cosmetic and has no real impact on functionality.
