Upgrading to Business to MNL?

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere. Looking to book travel from BWI-IAH-NRT-MNL at the beginning of the year. I've got some credit left from a canceled flight earlier this year that I'm planning to apply to the price of the ticket but I would like to upgrade to business class for the IAH-NRT portion.

Is there a proper way to book this? Thanks!

I also should add that I wanted to use miles for the upgrade.

If you want to use miles, you will need a co-pay ($$$) to go with it (unless you are booking full-fare economy - Y/B).
Suggest you look this thread, among others, that includes other embedded links.

One good option is to use the "is there R availability" website (google it) to identify confirmed upgrade seats to NRT. It should look at all routes, such as via iAH, ORD, DEN, SFO, LAX etc. of course, you won't be able to upgrade the NRT-MNL flight since it is on NH.

There is currently a fair amount of upgrade space ("R" fare class) if you can travel on 12/31 or 1/1. If you need to travel later, look at connecting through SEA, as that flight (SEA-NRT) is a much easier upgrade than all the other west coast connections.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked up the R website for 1/1/2014 and I see the chart but I'm not sure what I'm looking at or how to understand what I'm seeing.

On UA139 (dreamliner) it says BusinessFirst Number of Pax Checked = 1

What is the proper way to interpret this?

Thanks!
