United Airlines Announces New Nonstop Flights to Atlantic City, N.J. from ORD and IAH
"United Airlines today announced the airline will inaugurate service at Atlantic City International Airport, offering customers daily nonstop flights to United's hubs at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and United Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Smisek announced the service, which begins April 1, 2014, at a news conference at Newark Liberty International Airport, where United operates the region's largest airline hub.
From Chicago, United's flight to Atlantic City will depart at 8:10 a.m. daily, arriving at 11:17 a.m. The return flight will depart Atlantic City at 11:52 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 1:10 p.m.
From Houston, United's flight to Atlantic City will depart at 7 p.m. daily, arriving at 11:20 p.m. The return flight will depart Atlantic City at 6 a.m. and arrive in Houston at 8:49 a.m.
United Express carrier ExpressJet will operate the Atlantic City flights with 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft."

Love the new ACY service... but no thanks to an ERJ to IAH!
ORD-ACY seems much more realistic. There must be one hell of a subsidy coming UA's way to get the economics right of a 50-seater on a 1350-mile segment. One would think a flight to IAD makes a lot more sense.

Is that at all constructive?
Your other choice is...
Spirit.
This is what a regional jet should be used for - service to places that wouldn't otherwise get any.
Wonder what the tax incentives were on this one.

Sounds like a subsidy play, but what a joke. DL is adding routes with CR9s, while UA continues expanding its network of E145 routes. Start taking bets on how long these routes will last.

I guess it's for biz travel from ACY to IAH, useless in the other direction.

I'm wondering how much actual time/cost savings a traveler would realize flying directly to ACY versus flying to PHL and taking ground transportation for 60 miles. You'd have 3 flight time options, and mainline aircraft instead of the ERJ-145.

How long till both flights get the ax?
I just dont see it working out, maybe if LAS didnt exist or if they went up against Spirit and flew ACY-PBI or FLL or MIA. But with PHL an hours drive why would anyone subject themselves to the ACY-IH RJ flight

why is it a joke? You have this route or you dont. Tell people to take their pick, and they'll take the pick to have the route.
