UA's Baggage Calculator

Key Points:
  • No impact to UA *G (M+ Gold, Platinum, 1K, GS)
  • Non UA *G get +1 Bag @ 50lbs (previously three bags @70lbs). I.e.,
    • Two free bags at 50lbs for international itineraries
    • One free bag at 50lbs for domestic itineraries
    • All those on the same PNR get the *G bag waiver

For example, a TK *G would only have a free baggage allowance of one (1) bag not heavier than 50lbs when flying UA domestically.)

Obviously having certain Chase UA-branded cards or differing itineraries will affect this.

Until 2011, the *A *G benefit across the alliance was three free 20 KG (44lb) bags. In 2011 this was changed to an additional 20KGs of baggage or an additional bag. So UA is downgrading the non UA *G benefit to be equal to what *A requires: one bag in the case of UA since it has no free bag allowance for non-elites on domestic itineraries.

Thumbs down UA *G Benefit changed: Only 1 Free 50 lb Bag on Domestic, +1 International

As of October 17th UA's baggage calculator indicates Star Alliance Gold members receive only ONE checked bag up to 50lbs on domestic itineraries. Previously *Gs were afforded THREE checked bags up to 70lbs each.

This is the most significant devaluation of *G benefits by United in recent history.

What gives?

Thanks for catching that. ^ I'm not surprised to see the devaluations continue. This won't be the last IMHO.

We have revised some of our checked baggage policies for travel worldwide. For the latest checked baggage updates, please review all relevant baggage pages before you travel.

UA really shafted *S people as well. Looks like they get jack in terms of free checked bags.

They're probably trying to encourage people to fly UA, and keep their "home" FFP program as MP, as they're treating their own *S, *G members better than other carriers' *S, *G members.

If, of course, their checked baggage service charge lookup tool is correct, and this isn't actually a computer glitch. UA's had a few of those recently too.

This has no impact on UA gold, silver and higher, as far as changes go this one should have very little impact on those who fly UA frequently.

Plugging in status on this page leads me to conclude that UA Golds still get three bags but *A Golds only get one.

UA Silver gets one bag and *A Silver pays $25 for the first bag.

United Premier Gold members still have 3 bags.
https://www.united.com/web/en-US/con...r/default.aspx

Looks like UA is only making this change for Star Alliance Gold members.

If you're UA Premier Gold (and UA 1MM), you can still check 3 bags no charge.

But not reflected here: http://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/trav...geChecked.aspx

The two areas of the site are inconsistent. Mistake/glitch, or not?

According to the baggage calculator, international C now gets 2X70, and non-UA *G gets 2X50. MP Gold and higher continue to get 3X70.
Also noticed that full fare Y gets just 1 bag for free. When was that changed?

I noticed the description "We have revised some of our checked baggage policies for travel worldwide. For the latest checked baggage updates, please review all relevant baggage pages before you travel. Updated: October 17, 2013"

But couldn't really figure out exactly what changes are made until now...Just wonder what happened to the world that everything now requires you to do a complicated lookup (i.e. SF Giants' dynamic pricing) rather than a simple table

Aren't all *A carriers required to give specific benefits to *G generally?

Wouldn't this be a violation of the *A terms?

And, if this is legal according to *A terms, then I'd expect a reciprocal devaluation from *A partners, which would be awful for everyone.

Sorry folks but its about time UA started cutting the benefits to all those who credit A3 20k and get *G for 3 yrs.

Of cause if *A made ALL its Carriers give out *G @ 50K min there wouldnt be a need for this
