SFO LHR Aircraft Change

UA930/931 remains 747-400.

However, from Sunday 27th October UA900/901 vanishes and UA930/931 goes to a 777-200.

It might be UA website screwing with me as no fare classes are showing for these flights and it's overnight in the US, but would they really condense 2 x 747 flights into 1 x 777 during the winter, and even if they did, it seems crazy to kill off the earlier options in both directions?

The seat map for my UA900 has also changed to a 772 on the 8th October, so glad I checked as I had lost my seat reservations!

Thanks for the heads up, AdamUK. Am heading to the UK in Oct. and I was just worried about the UA 747 ops record until I saw your post.

My SO and I are on GF Award tix UA 901 Oct. 3, returning UA 900 Oct. 18. Fortunately, after a mad scramble confirming your dates on .bomb, it looks like we just missed both sides of the strange interim 777-2 window before they do away with the 747s on the SFO-LHR route altogether at the end of Oct.

My fear was/is getting our Award tix re-booked on a 777-2 (12 vs. 8 GF) and no elite status for my SO, making it unlikely for GF with at best BF and at worst E+. Not sitting together is not an option.

As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, "It's always something!"

Last night, both 839 and 863 had a scattering of seats free (less than the difference in capacity between a 747 and a 777).

Tonight, 863 is oversold (F0C0Y0), and 839 is likely the same (F2C2Y1)

Tomorrow, both are pretty much full if not already oversold (F4J1Y3 and F7C0Y3)

Sunday 839 is Y<9, although 863 does still have some space available.

Someone remind me how many seats/day we're going to lose when they go to the 777s?

That really tells you nothing. It's all about the yields.

From UA's perspective, if there is more demand than supply, they can charge more for the remaining seats. The result will simply be that it will be much harder to find seats in the cheapest fare buckets, which is just fine for United. Not so much for the bargain basement passengers.

School holidays start today so all aeroplanes departing Australian aerodromes will be packed to the gills Saturday Sept 21 & Sun Sept 22
I would expect the nine wide bodies departing SYD for North America will be very full this weekend.

These are the SFO/LAX -> SYD flights, not in the reverse.

Is the 747 coming back to Chicago?

Apols if I missed the memo. Searched but did not find.

I was surprised to see the 747 back on the NRT-ORD route while scoping out summer travel plans. Any idea how soon they're coming back? I never thought I'd miss them but I do! I must have blocked all the delays, cancellations and unscheduled refueling stops out of my memory....

In the past few days I've now heard from multiple reliable sources rumors/claims that a 777 MEL direct US flight will be added in September or October 2014. Has anyone heard or can confirm the same?

I have heard 3 Rumors
first was seasonal swap of 777 and 747 for capacity
777 for April->October and 747 November ->March

Second was 2x 777's year round and 3rd 777 doing ex Mel service for peek periods

Third was
2x 777 Syd/Mel->USA
1x 787 Syd->IAH (the QF flight to DFW has proved that this a market success)

well, the QF flight doesn't prove anything. The QF flight has hubs on both ends. Something UA would not have with SYD-IAH.

Yes it is, but SYD is not a UA hub or a hub for any of their partners.

It's hard to believe that United would bring back the 747s post April 2014 with their bad history on this route.

I have no idea about the rumours but suspect the first very unlikely .
