Rule 5 Cancellation of Reservations
  • In addition to exercising any of its remedies in Rule 6 K) below, UA reserves the right to cancel bookings and/or reservations which it deems fraudulent, abusive, illogical, fictitious, which are booked and/or reserved with no intention of flying, or for which the passenger makes a misrepresentation without notice to the passenger or the individual making the booking. The types of improper reservations that UA will cancel without notice include, but are not limited to: reservations made without having been requested by or on behalf of the named passenger; reservations made to hold or block seats for the purpose of obtaining lower fares, MP award inventory, travel certificates, or upgrades that may not otherwise be available; reservations made to manipulate, abuse, or circumvent any of UA’s fare rules, policies or provisions; reservations made for the same passenger on flights traveling on or about the same date between one or more of the same or nearby origin or destination cities; and reservations with connections that depart before the arrival on the inbound flight.

Yep, you are in volition of the Carriage of Contract for UA
UA reserves the right to cancel bookings and/or reservations which it deems fraudulent, abusive, illogical, fictitious, which are booked and/or reserved with no intention of flying, or for which the passenger makes a misrepresentation without notice to the passenger or the individual making the booking.
UA has become increasingly strict about this. UA feels this is depriving the opportunity to sell more tickets.

Consider using SDC instead or using a different carrier for the other flight.

I’ve got a OW booked FCO-EWR but now may need to fly two days earlier NAP-EWR. If I make a second booking for that slightly different route two days earlier, will it get flagged?

These are all UA and award tix.

There’s at least a 90% chance, yes.

Ugh! I just need like two weeks to sort it out. May just change it anyway. I could book on another airline but the times are better on UA.

I am still annoyed with United's attempt cancelling non-duplicated, non-double, non-impossible reservations - e.g. EWR - LHR, follow by DUB - EWR more than a day later (30 hrs+) following LHR arrival. As a result, I have stopped booking United international flights since, and also due to poor flight experience in general.

United seems to be more sensitive on INTL flights than domestics. I flew EWR to LAX (UA), LAX to EWR (on another carrier), and then EWR to ROC (UA), all on the same day...not a peep from United.

2 award tix permitted a day apart?

If I book 2 UA award tix - one on Swiss and one on LH - a day apart so I can wait to figure out best departure date will UA cancel one of them?
One is LAX-ZRH-VCE and other LAX-MUC-VCE.

Probably. Their system has gotten good at detecting impossible itineraries.

And quite possible ones, too. I've had it email me about same day flights leaving from different airports but whose arrival and departure times are several hours apart, such that I could have made it to the 2nd airport on my own. Annoying.

I did this last week, except one award booking and one revenue - within an hour got the warning email to resolve or the first booking would be autocancelled.

Yes, It happened to me.

I had an award ticket Asia (being vague) - SIN - LAX. Then I found a good cash ticket so booked Asia (same airport) - FRA - LAX. One was at 11 AM and other at 3 AM the next day. It let me book, but I got an email an hour after telling me the system detected dupilcate/overlapping iteneraries and I'd risk one of them getting cancelled (forgot which one). So, yeah, it might let you book but it will be flagged,

Might still be worth booking, but note that even if they don't get caught by whatever automated system they have, it's possible that future reservations get scrutinized later on when interacting with UA.

For example, I got scolded once by a phone agent when trying to deal with a schedule change when they noticed that I had a similar award reservation several days later.

Maybe. It’s still a violation of the terms of service.

Awards are hard enough to find without people squatting on ones they won’t take.
