As of 3 March 2019, UA elites are being matched to the new Marriott Bonvoy Gold level including those UA elites who had gone Marriott Plat status during the Marriott / Starwood merger process. Marriott Bonvoy Gold does not include lounge access and late checkout is 2 PM

After merge Marriotts in BKK are not offering free lounge access to new Golds. Also at least in BKK, many reports regarding Hilton hotels not generous like in the past to upgrade Gold to executive floor unless higher category room has been booked, full breakfast yes. You would naturally expect Hilton will be more stingy since many Marriott Golds are flocking to Hilton now and Hilton lounges are already crowd. Here Aspire card comes to your rescue!

Downgraded from Platinum to Gold sometime during the day today and the card in my Apple Wallet also reflects the downgrade

How many nights did you stay at Marriott each year you got status matched? I bet Marriott has done its analysis. The question is if the bookings from status matcher really drove up its business. If someone gets a status match to Plat and stays at Marriott for only a few nights because of the matches status, how is he different from any other non-status traveler? Does it mean Marriott should give Plat to anyone who wants it?
Of course, with the loss of lounge access, I'm back to all Hilton. Don't get me wrong; Hilton HHonors is not a great rewards program, even for Diamonds like me. But at least I still have lounge access with them and the occasional upgrade.

They did drive business from me, FWIW. I stayed at several Marriott properties in 2018 when I have typically been all-Hilton. Only one of those was a work-related stay (where we have to pick Marriott properties in most cases).

I'm travelling 6 months per year (not at once, but total).

How many nights did you stay at Hilton in comparison?
My point is Marriott probably doesn’t feel 11 nights are enough to move the needle to justify continuing to give you a status other members need to stay 50 nights to achieve. They still give you a status (Gold) for free that requires more than twice of the nights you stayed. Sure, they may lose 11 nights from you in 2019, but they want your loyalty to Marriott, which is still with Hilton. A random traveler could easily stay at Marriott for 11 nights without Platinum status. Giving you Plat status is like giving anyone Platinum status unless you become a loyal customer who moves all of your future stays to Marrott.

Good to know about the Aspire! I didn't know about it. I'll definitely look into that. Have you found any way to use the $250 credit on UA? We don't pay for baggage fees or meals.
I was looking at the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant but that's only giving out Gold, which is kinda useless for such a premium card. Again--if I was already Platinum, it would make more sense.

Personally, I became loyal-er to Marriott over Hilton since the UA matched status. Till then I was switching between the two based on price/distance balance to my work location. I had gone Marriott-only (probably +15 nights/year to Marriott from Hilton). Now I am debating - should I go back to splitting between the two chains or even focus harder on Marriott to re-earn Platinum... Neither gives lounge access to Golds... Thoughts? Suggestions?

The upgrade chances are about even between the two brands and breakfast is generally comparable when comparing in the same city. However Hilton doesn’t guarantee late checkout even at the Diamond tier whereas Marriott does at the Platinum+. That swings my personal dollars over to Marriott.
Back on topic, I somehow still have Platinum status. Hopefully it’s either because of GS or because I stayed 42 nights last year at Marriotts (all personal money...business travel has to be at a Hilton by policy). Not holding my breath though.

One better way to get UA credit is the Inflight Wifi I believe. For me I have switched back to Southwest and just bought gift card online then got full credit. You should go to dedicated AMEX forums to find more details.

same here. As a hotel program “free agent” that will reduce some incentive to book Marriott going forward.
